Badgers are excited to finally be back on the water
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Wisconsin women's lightweight team got their season started this weekend at the Cardinal Invitational, hosted by Louisville, on Melton Hill Lake.
After a week of training down in Tennessee, the lightweights were eager to race again, but didn't place as they had hoped, on the first day of racing. They came back on Sunday with a more focused mindset and it paid off.
The Badgers' second varsity eight edged out Louisville on Sunday morning, and the third varsity eight/first novice eight finished ahead of Tennessee to end the weekend for Wisconsin.
As the only lightweight team competing, the Badgers were able to get some experience out on the water, racing against: Yale, Tennessee, Clemson, Alabama, Wisconsin openweights, Louisville and Duke.

On the performance this weekend
"Coming out of winter training we were pretty excited to get back to racing and get back on the water. I think we struggled a little bit on execution on the first day of racing and that showed in our results. Maybe we were a little too excited. We took the evening to kind of reset and get back to our fundamentals… we were a lot more productive and successful today."
On being the only lightweight team
"These weren't necessarily our direct competition in terms of our season. It's always good to lineup against bigger, faster crews. Openweight Division I programs are fast, but we want to test ourselves against the best in the country. We went into it knowing it was going to be a challenge, but embracing that challenge and seeing what we could put out."
On looking ahead
"We've got the next two weeks to figure some things out and sharpen up a bit. That April 1 regatta is a lightweight regatta, so that will be our first big test in terms of our direct competition… we are looking to make a statement at that race."
Up Next: The Badgers will head to the Lightweight Invitational in Princeton, N.J., on April 1.
