MADISON, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin softball team will head to Lincoln to face the University of Nebraska.
1. LAST TIME OUT: The Badgers had a tough weekend against No. 20 Northwestern losing all three games in the home series. In game one, Wisconsin and the Wildcats faced off in a pitching duel as both teams gave up only four hits in the seven innings played. However, Northwestern was able to score off a drawn walk with bases loaded to give the visiting team the game's only run in the 1-0 loss. Due to weather, the remaining games were moved to a doubleheader on Saturday. In the first game of the day, Katie Keller hit two home runs for three RBI, the only runs of the game for Wisconsin. The final game of the series may have been the best one as Molly Schlosser tied things up in the seventh inning with a two-run blast for the first home run of her career. Into extra innings the game went and the intensity only increased. Peyton Bannon made a stellar diving catch in left field in the top of the ninth, however, the Wildcat runner on third was able to tag up and score to give Northwestern the lead. Ava Kuszak doubled in her pinch-hit at bat to put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the inning but she was left stranded and the game ended with a score of 4-3.
2. SCHLOSSER SENDS IT: Molly Schlosser had an impressive day on Saturday in game two of the doubleheader. Not only was her seventh inning game-tying home run a massive moment for both her and the Badgers, but the sophomore also had two other hits in the game on two bunt-singles going 3-for-4. That was the first game this season that Schlosser had gotten three hits in one game. Her success has been steady as of late with a six game hitting streak from April 7 to April 12. With 28 hits on the year, tied for third most on the team, Schlosser has obtained a batting average of .275. The outfielder has five more hits than she ended the year with her in 2022, with multiple games left to play this spring.
3. HUBBARD HITS A LOT: Ellie Hubbard is an absolute baller at shortstop making difficult defensive plays look routine for the sophomore. And on offense, Hubbard has found her groove. The Illinois native had four hits in the first 12 games of the season, however, now has 17 hits in the last 15 games for Wisconsin being one of the most consistent hitters in the line up. Hubbard has worked her way up to a .289 batting average after going on multiple hitting streaks, the most recent one stretching from April 8 to April 14 going six games with at least one hit. In game three against Northwestern, Hubbard was the other player besides Schlosser with an RBI, sending one through the infield to score Keller and put the Badgers on the board.
4. SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: Â Nebraska currently sits at second in the conference with a 30-13 overall record. The Cornhuskers are 10-4 in the Big Ten and have won the last four games, most recently sweeping Indiana who is third in the conference with a 9-5 record. Freshman Katelyn Caneda leads the way for the team with a .398 batting average with 49 hits. Just below Caneda, the Andrews sisters are tied for team-high home runs with 11 each. Brooke Andrews is second on the team with a .364 batting average and Billie Andrews is third with an average of .359 despite leading the Cornhuskers with 51 hits.Â
5. UP NEXT:Â Following the away series against Nebraska, Wisconsin will head to College Park to take on Maryland for the second to last Big Ten series of the season before returning home for one last home series against the University of Iowa.
