PHILADELPHIA -- The 17th-ranked Wisconsin men's track and field team won two events and set two school records at Penn Relays. The meet began on Thursday and wrapped up on Saturday.
First day of events
On Thursday in the field events,
Jason Swarens finished seventh in the hammer throw college with a toss of 192 feet, 11 inches. In the hammer throw championship,
Sam Coil finished ninth with a throw of 207-5.
Freshman
Micah Wilson continued his rookie outdoor season, finishing 10th in the 5,000-meter run in 13 minutes, 56.68 seconds.
Sharp, Enz, Hassan, and Spencer win DMR on day two
On Friday, the quartet
Jackson Sharp,
Colin Enz,
Abdullahi Hassan, and
Adam Spencer won the Champion of America distance medley relay, the fourth COA relay title for the Badgers. Sharp led off the Badgers, running the 1,200 split in 2:56.22 followed by Enz, who ran 47.69 for 400 meters. Hassan ran the fastest 800-meter split of the day in 1:47.13 while Spencer clinched the win with a 1600-meter split time of 4:02.80. The Badgers won the race in 9:33.82, more than a second ahead of second-place Villanova.
In the discus throw College,
Andrew Stone won the event with a toss of 178-11, and in the long jump
Justin Kiefel placed second with a leap of 23-8 ¾.
Lawrence Johnson finished 10th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.75.
Final day finishes
On the final day in the 4xmile Championship of America relay,
Bob Liking,
Jack Meijer, Sharp, and Spencer broke a 47-year old school record. The relay squad ran a time of 16:14.14 to finish second, breaking the previous mark of 16:14.3 set by Schumacher, Lyndgaard, Johnson and Lacey in 1976. The new mark ranks as the sixth fastest in collegiate history.
Swarens set not only a personal best but a school record in the shot put championship. The redshirt junior from Terre Haute, Indiana, finished second at 67-0 ½, shattering the UW record of 65-6 1/4 set by teammate
Andrew Stone last season. Swarens also improved upon his personal best of 65-2 set earlier this season. He is now the leader in the Big Ten this season and ranks third nationally. Stone finished seventh today with a toss of 62-7 ¼.
In the men's triple jump,
Justin Kiefel placed 10th with a hop, skip and jump of 47-10

The Badgers host the Wisconsin Alumni Classic while also honoring our seniors on Senior Day on Friday, May 5. The meet takes place at the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex. Field events begin at 1 p.m. and running events start at 3:30 p.m.
