UW battles tough conditions rowing on the Charles River

BOSTON - The second and third varsity eight boats stood out for No. 11 Wisconsin in tough conditions on the Charles River against No. 8 Northeastern on Sunday.

The first varsity eight had an early lead on Northeastern but were not able to hold on and they lost by about nine seconds. The second eight boat had an impressive race, but fell short down the stretch. The third varsity eight boat by less than a second and secured an impressive win.

On the conditions.

"We knew the conditions were going to be rough. There was a real rough tailwind, which got worse and worse as you went on the course. It's very difficult."

On the first varsity.
"They went real hard for first the first 500, and we were right there actually ahead of Northeastern, but inexplicably in the second 500. Boom. We dropped our rate down probably three below Northeastern and that's just not gonna cut it."

"Yesterday we were the complete opposite. We were more aggressive and I'm not sure what happened, but today we ended up losing by 8.9 or something against a good team like Northeastern in rough conditions on their home water. The guys are realizing like, oops, coach, we kind of messed up. We had one excellent race this week and one not so good. So let's bounce back."

On the second varsity eight.
"2V had another excellent race. They were the only boat that raced well twice. We've got three freshmen in there. The stroke novice started rowing in September. He's that good. Elias Strassman again, just relentless. When that kid learns how to row, he's gonna be dangerous, especially because he already knows how to pull."

On the third varsity eight.
"The guys were real pleased with the results. Yesterday I'd say the 3V boat had the worst race and now they're the one that came away with the victory."

Up Next: Wisconsin will begin to prepare for the Eastern Sprints that is set to take place in Worcester, Massachusetts, on May 14.
