WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Wisconsin Badger softball team completed the series sweep over the Purdue Boilermakers with a 5-1 victory to win its fourth-straight Big Ten game.
Kayla Konwent continued to produce for the Badgers (20-10, 7-2) while sending a single to center for the visiting team's first hit of the day. Two walks following the early Konwent hit loaded the bases for Wisconsin and Brooke Kuffel. The hot-hitter stayed hot while sending an inside pitch over the shortstop's head to score Marytherese Nevin, who was pinch-running for Konwent.
The Badger's bats didn't slow down in the second inning as Kayla Konwent added her second hit in as many at-bats. Skylar Sirdashney made her way to third after being walked in the first at-bat of the inning, and Konwent poked a shot to left-center to plate the Badger's third basemen and give Wisconsin the 2-0 lead. Katie Keller did precisely the same while finding a gap in Purdue's (17-22, 2-9) left field, and Konwent made her way home from second base for the Badger's third run of the game.
Ellie Hubbard sent a shot past the Purdue first basemen's outstretched arms for a single to start the third inning before Skylar Sirdashney found her way on again, thanks to an error by the Boilermaker's defense. Molly Schlosser came up with an answer and sent a double down first base line to score Hubbard and give Wisconsin the 4-0 advantage.
Although the fourth inning looked like it would be a quick one, Peyton Bannon turned that around with a two-out double to left center. Ellie Hubbard then sent the second straight two-bagger to the wall to score Bannon for the Badger's fifth run.
Rylie Crane and Christaana Angelopulos each added a single in the fifth inning, but both of the runners were left on base to head into the final few frames of the game.
Wisconsin had shut out the Boilermakers for 20-straight innings before the bottom of the seventh when Purdue finally put a run on the board. The Boilermakers looked to rally against UW's Gabi Salo, tallying two singles and a double, cutting the score to 5-1. The Badgers, however, quickly returned Maddie Schwartz, the starting pitcher, back to the mound to close the game out with two outs. Schwartz took care of business as the next Boilermaker grounded out on the first-pitch, securing the 5-1 victory and series sweep for Wisconsin.
Schwartz (7-7) threw 6.1 innings and gave up just three hits while striking out five. Those three hits were the only ones she gave up in the 13.1 innings she pitched this weekend after her no-hitter in Friday's game.
