SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Seven-time All-American Joise Schaefer advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships thanks to a top-12 finish in the shot put on Thursday to highlight action for the UW women's track and field team at the 2023 NCAA West Preliminary Round at Hornet Stadium.
In addition, Destiny Huven and Madison Mooney advanced out of the opening round of the 100 hurdles and the 1500 meters, respectively, and will race in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Schaefer punches tickets to national meet
Schaefer booked her ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the third-straight year, placing eighth in the talented field thanks to a toss of 57 feet, 1 ½ inches. The Baraboo native ranks second in the NCAA this season with a school-record mark of 62-3 ¼.
In other finals, redshirt senior Olivia Roberts finished 15th in the hammer throw, with a distance of 202 feet and 6 inches, Redshirt junior Chloe Lindeman finished 18th with a throw of 199-6, The Big Ten runner-up in the hammer throw, Lindeman had a strong season as she quickly climbed to the top of UW's all-time list and broke her school record four times during the outdoor season. Asia Rave was one of eight freshmen competing in the hammer, she finished 44th with a distance of 174-0.
In the last final of the evening, Alexa Westley and Samantha Stieve finished back-to-back in the 10,000 meters, finishing 28th and 29th respectively. Westley crossed in 33 minutes and 34.46 seconds, while Stieve followed in 33:35.53. Danielle Orie rounded out the Badgers finishing 33rd in 33:57.07.
Huven and Mooney qualify for Saturday
Huven claimed her spot in the 100 meter hurdles quarterfinals. Huven finished second in her heat with a time of 13.10 seconds, finishing with the 10th-fastest time in the preliminary round.
Mooney advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1500 meters after clocking the 13th fastest time in qualifying of 4:15.74, a personal best. She will compete on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. CT
Victoria Heiligenthal and Emma Watcke joined Mooney in the 1500 meters, crossing the line in 4:23.54 and 4:28.61, respectively.
Danielle Bellino competed in her first-ever NCAA prelims, she competed in the 800 meters finishing fourth in her heat and 29th overall in 2:07.54. Bellino finished her career with UW ranking ninth on the all-time list in the outdoor 800 meters.
Junior Kiley Robbins competed in her third NCAA West Prelims in the 100-meter dash, taking 31st in 11.54 seconds.

The Badgers will compete in the quarterfinals of their events on Friday. Field events begin at 3 p.m. with running events, which will stream live on ESPN+, start at 7 p.m. CT. The Badger men qualified three athletes to Friday's finals with Adam Spencer competing in the 1500 meters, L.O. Johnson in the 100 meters, and Abdullahi Hassan in the 800 meters. Also competing on Friday, Jackson Sharp, Jack Meijer, and Rowen Ellenberg will run the 5,000 meters, Logan Measner and Ben Nibbelink will compete in the steeplechase, and Andrew Stone will partake in the discus. All nine will be looking to finish among the top 12 in their respective events to advance to the national championships.
The UW women have six individual athletes challenging for the right to advance to the NCAA Championships when they compete on Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m.
