MADISON, Wis. – A trio of Wisconsin women's rowers will take part in this week's World Rowing Cup 2 Regatta that runs Jun 16-18 in Varese, Italy, and are among eight Badger women's and men's rowers who are invited to USRowing's second 2023 Senior National Team Selection Camp later this month.
The selection camp will run June 26-July 17 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., and will help choose the men's quadruple sculls, women's quadruple sculls, men's four, women's four, men's eight and women's eight crews that will represent the U.S. at the 2023 World Rowing Championships. The world championships take place Sept. 3-10 in Belgrade, Serbia.Â
Racing at this week's World Cup 2 are Lauren O'Connor (Belleville) and Sophia Vitas (Franklin), who are both part of the women's quadruple sculls and separate double sculls entries.
In addition, 2020 Olympian Maddie Wanamaker (Neenah) will compete in the women's four.
All three were chosen to race in Italy through the first Olympic Events Selection Camp and have been provisionally named to the 2023 Senior National Team, but not to a particular boat as of yet.
O'Connor, Vitas and Wanamaker will be at the second Senior National Team Selection camp along with fellow Badgers Isa Darvin (Madison), Grace Joyce (Northfield, Illinois) and
Vicky Opitz (Middleton), as well as Michael Knippen (Germantown) and coxswain James Catalano. (Greenwich, Connecticut). Opitz currently serves as a women's lightweight assistant coach for the Badgers.Â
