MADISON, Wis. – The 13th-ranked women's swimming and diving team and the 22nd-ranked men's swimming and diving team kicks off the new year off with a triangular meet against UC San Diego and UCLA in La Jolla, California on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT.
Here are five things to know for this weekend.
1. Ranked in the Top 25: According to the December CSCAA poll, the Badgers check in at No. 13 for the women's team and No. 22 on the men's side. The women's team is undefeated in dual match-ups at 4-0 so far this season, while the men's team is 3-1 in dual match-ups. This weekend, the women's team takes on No. 25 UCLA, the third ranked opponent for the Badgers this season.
2. Men's B1G Leaders: The Badgers have several athletes that rank among the top eight in the Big Ten, including Taiko Torepe-Ormsby with a second-place ranking in the 50 free. Freshman Luukas Vainio checks in at No. 5 in the 200 free accompanied by Chris Morris in seventh and Yigit Aslan in eighth. Aslan also sits in sixth place in the Big Ten in the 500 free. Defending conference champion Dominik Mark Torok is ranked third in the 400 individual medley. Andrew Bensonl represents the Badgers in the breaststroke with a seventh-place rank in the 100 breast.
3. Women's B1G Leaders: Hailey Tierney continues to make a huge impact for Wisconsin as a freshman, sitting at fourth place in 50 free in an NCAA B qualifying time of 22.08. She is also ranked 10th in the 100 free in 49.77. Blair Stoneburg is in third place in the 500 free just ahead of Abby Carlson, the reigning Big Ten champion in the 500 free, in fourth. In the 1000 free, Paige Mckenna is ranked second in 9:37.69 with freshman Maddie Waggoner closely behind her in third in 9:38.35. Stoneburg is sixth with Alivia Lindorfer closely behind in seventh. Phoebe Bacon leads the conference in the 100 back and 200 back, securing her first-place spot in both events by over a second. McConagha closely follows in the 100 back with a third-place ranking with an NCAA "B" cut time of 52.23.
4. Diving Right in: Senior Daniel Muller looks to continue his success on the 3-meter board at the tri-meet after earning two consecutive wins at the start of the season. Muller also won the 1-meter with 326.63 points, earning an NCAA "B" cut standard, against Notre Dame. He is currently ranked 12th in the Big Ten in the 3-meter board and 13th in the 1-meter.
