LA JOLLA, Calif. – The 12th-ranked Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team opened the new year with convincing wins over UC San Diego and UCLA in a tri-meet on Saturday.
The Badgers picked up 12 event wins to finish the meet off with 172.50 points, followed by UCLA with 108.50 points and UC San Diego with 63 points.
Junior Abby Carlson started the meet off strong, leading the Badgers to a sweep in the 500 free with a final time of 4:46.24. She was closely followed by freshman Maddie Waggoner who placed second in 4:53.76, and Paige McKenna who placed third in 4:54.50. Waggoner led the sweep for Wisconsin in the 1000 free, hitting the wall first in 9:53.22, with McKenna following in 9:55.89 and Alivia Lindorfer finishing third in 10:04.18.
Phoebe Bacon continues to dominate in the backstroke events, winning the 100 back in 53.36, followed by Kaylyn Schoof in third with a final time of 56.02. Bacon also garnered another first-place finish in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:00.44. She also won the 100-individual medley in 55.97.
Hailey Tierney picked up her fourth 50 free win of the season, touching the wall first in 22.80, followed by Abby Wanezek in second with a time of 23.71. Tierney also won the 50 fly in 24.48.
Mackenzie McConagha also had an impressive meet picking up two individual wins. She won the 100 fly in 54.71 and won the 50 back in 25.57.
