Five Things to Know: No. 1 Badgers host OSU Thursday, play at Wrigley Field Saturday

Badgers are set for a top-two showdown in Madison and their first outdoors game since 2010.

MADISON, Wis. – The top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team will face the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes Thursday at LaBahn Arena and Saturday at Wrigley Field as part of the The Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday and 4:30 p.m. CT on Saturday in Chicago, Illinois.

Fans can watch the action on Thursday on B1G+ or listen to Zach Sielaff on The Game 1070. Saturday's game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Thursday's game is sold out, but tickets are available through SeatGeek. Patrons coming to the game at LaBahn should note that parking is available in Lots 29 and 46 for $5 and ADA parking is available in Lot 48 and 87 for $5.

Maggie Scannell celebrates a goal

1. LAST TIME OUT
The Badgers closed out their first 20 games of the season with a two-game series sweep of the Minnesota State Mavericks on the road. They overcame the Mavericks 2-1 in the series' first game and posted a 5-0 in the second game. Maggie Scannell earned WCHA Rookie of the Week for a two-goal showing in game two of the series. They head into 2025 with a six-game winning streak. 

The Badgers played 43 games in 2024 and posted a whopping 40-3-0 record. They closed out the start of the 2024-25 season with an impressive 19-1-0 record.

2. FROZEN CONFINES

Game one of the series will take place at LaBahn Arena, after which both teams will travel down to Wrigley Field in Chicago as part of the Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series. Wisconsin hits the ice outdoors for the first time since Feb. 6, 2010, when they defeated Bemidji State 6-1 at Camp Randall Stadium. The men's hockey team will play right after at 8 p.m. CT  against Michigan State

3.  SIX NATIONS REWIND

Twelve Wisconsin women's hockey players competed in the Six Nations Tournament representing USA and Canada's Collegiate Women's Select Teams in Tampere, Finland in December. 

Eight Badgers — Lacey Eden, Laila Edwards, Caroline Harvey, Kirsten Simms, Casey O'Brien, Ava McNaughton, Cassie Hall and Laney Potter — took home the title with Team USA. Ava Murphy, Emma Venusio and Sarah Wozniewicz earned runner-up honors with Team Canada. Wisconsin commit Adéla Šapovalivová recorded two goals in the tournament representing Czechia.

In addition, former Badger legend Molly Engstrom was an assistant coach for the U.S. squad while current UW athletic trainer Stef Arndt was on the U.S. bench.



 

4. SEE YOU AT SLUGGERS!

Gather with your Badger friends in Chicago before the Wisconsin hockey teams play in the Frozen Confines of Wrigley Field on Saturday, Jan. 4, at Sluggers Bar, presented by UW Credit Union.

Located a two-minute walk from Wrigley Field at 3540 North Clark Street in Chicago, the festivities at Sluggers Bar begin at 1 p.m. There will be Wisconsin swag giveaways and food and drink available to purchase, among other activities.

5. AGAINST OSU

The Badgers split their first season series against the Buckeyes in Columbus, walking away with their first road win since defeating Ohio State 5-0 on November 28, 2020. Their 4-2 win featured a comeback after trailing the Buckeyes 2-0 in the first period. The Buckeyes marked Wisconsin’s only loss in the first half of the season in a close 3-2 game.

The teams meet again ranked No. 1 and No. 2, the same seats they held when they clashed earlier this season. Wisconsin and OSU have combined to win the last five national championships as UW has won NCAA titles in 2019, 2021 and 2023 while the Buckeyes captured NCAA titles in 2022 and 2024. The two programs have met in the NCAA championship game in each of the last two seasons while they have met in the WCHA Final Faceoff in five of the last six seasons.
