Five Things to Know: Wisconsin vs. Maryland

Badgers take on the Terrapins at home

MADISON, Wis. — With three of its next four games at the Kohl Center, the Wisconsin men's basketball team looks to create momentum when it hosts Maryland at the Kohl Center on Tuesday night. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. (CT) on Peacock.

1. LAST TIME OUT

The Badgers fell in overtime at Iowa on Saturday, suffering an 88-86 loss at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Steven Crowl had a strong showing, finishing with a team-high 22 points and six rebounds. AJ Storr put up 21 points, while Chucky Hepburn was just shy of a double-double, finishing with 18 points, nine rebounds, plus four assists and four steals.

2. SERIES HISTORY

Tuesday marks the 22nd all-time meeting between Wisconsin and Maryland in a series that dates back to 1931. The Badgers lead the series, 13-8, having won three of the last four meetings. Since Maryland joined the Big Ten in 2015, the Badgers hold a 8-6 advantage. For games played in Madison, UW leads, 6-2.

The two sides last faced off on Jan. 25, 2023, as the Terps came away with a 73-55 win in College Park. However, the last time Maryland played in Madison, the Badgers won 64-59. Chucky Hepburn led the way with 13 points in the last meeting at the Kohl Center, while Steven Crowl had 12 points and six assists.

3. SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

Maryland holds a 14-12 record on the season, which includes a 6-9 record in conference play. The team is coming off an 85-80 home loss against No. 14 Illinois on Saturday. The Terps have been one of the top defensive teams in the Big Ten, allowing just 64.6 points per game, but have only scored just 69.8 points per game themselves (ranked 13th out of 14 teams).

Senior Jahmir Young has been one of the best scorers in the Big Ten, averaging 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists on the season. This ranks third in the Big Ten and 13th in the nation. Julian Reese is averaging 13.6 points and 10.1 rebounds, while Donta Scott is putting up 11.5 points to go with 5.0 rebounds per game.

4. CROWL REACHES 1K

This past Saturday, Steven Crowl became the 49th Wisconsin men's basketball player to score 1,000 career points. The 7-footer has been a staple of the program for the past few seasons, only improving as time has passed. Last season, he increased his averages to 12.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

This season, Crowl is averaging 11.3 points (tied for second on UW), 7.7 rebounds (leads UW) and 2.2 assists per game (ranks second for UW). Crowl has led UW in scoring in 16 career games, with the team having a 14-2 record in those games.

5. BO RYAN HALL OF FAME FINALIST

Former Wisconsin men's basketball head coach Bo Ryan was recently named one of 14 finalists for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2024. The legendary coach is the winningest coach in Wisconsin history, holding a 364-130 (.737) record. Ryan led the Badgers to seven Big Ten championships and 14 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. This includes seven Sweet 16s, three Elite Eights, back-to-back Final Fours and the 2015 national championship game. Ryan received four Big Ten Coach of the Year honors during his career.
