WALNUT, Calif. – Wisconsin men's track and field senior Cade Amborn started his first decathlon of the 2024 season strong with a PR in the 100 meters to highlight action on the first day of the decathlon at the Mt SAC Relays on Wednsday afternoon.
Amborn sits in 15th place with 3,882 points and was accompanied by UW alum Zach Ziemek. Ziemek, a two-time Olympian, had a score of 2,674 points through three events before retiring during the high jump portion of the decathlon.
Both athletes got the day off to a strong start, earning personal bests in the 100 meters. "Double Z" finished second in the event, crossing the line in 10.57 seconds. Amborn placed 20th at 11.19, shaving three-hundredths of a second off of his previous best.
The pair then turned to the long jump, where Ziemek grabbed another top-10 finish, earning seventh with a leap of 23 feet, 11 ¾ inches (7.31m). Amborn finished 14th overall and sixth in his section with a jump of 23-1 ¾ (7.05m).
Ziemek ended his day after the shot put, finishing third in the event with a throw of 51-2 ¾ (15.61m). Amborn placed 13th with a distance of 46-1 ½ (14.06m).
Amborn tied for third in the high jump with a clearance of 6-6 (1.98m).
The Bangor, Wisconsin, native ended the first day of the decathlon with a time of 52.15 in the 400 meters to place seventh. His Day 1 score of 3,882 is just six shy of his Day 1 PR of 3,888 set last year at the Bryan Clay Invitational, a meet where he set his decathlon PR with a total of 7383 points.
Up Next: Day 2 of the decathlon at the Mt. Sac Relays kicks off Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles at 12 p.m. CT. On Friday, UW will send four athletes to the Wake Forest Invitational. Freshman Ruby Madden will compete in the 1500 meters at 1:10 p.m. CT, while Alexa Westley will represent the Badgers in the 10,000 meters at 9:25 p.m. On the men's side, Joe dosReis and Max Hartke will run in the 1500 meters.
