ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Wisconsin men's track & field junior Adam Spencer won gold in the 800 meters on Sunday to lead the Badgers to a third-place finish at the 2024 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Australian 1500-meter champion sat in the back of the pack for the first lap before turning on the jets and out-kicking Indiana's Cam Marshall, crossing the line in 1 minute, 47.96 seconds. Freshman Andrew Casey trailed close behind Spencer in a tightly contested race. The Minnesota native finished fifth at 1:48.62, missing out on a medal by milliseconds.
It marks Spencer's fifth Big Ten title as he became the second Badger in the last three years to win the outdoor 800 meters as Abdullahi Hassan won the event at the 2022 conference meet.
Sophomore Logan Measner added to his stellar weekend with a bronze medal in the 5000 meters, just one day after his gold in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Measner ran Sunday's 5K in 14:01.84 as Micah Wilson (4th) and Johnny Livingstone (8th) both added points for the Badgers.Â
On the sprints side, sophomore Jalen Williams outlasted Ohio State's Mason Louis in the 400 meters to earn a bronze medal at 46.73. Williams earned silver in the event during the 2024 indoor season, setting a school record along the way.Â
Former Division III standout Justin Kiefel recorded a personal best in the triple jump as he finished 12th with a leap of 49 feet, 9 ¾ inches (15.18 meters).Â
In the discus throw, Jake Schaefer placed 13th with a toss of 175-9 (53.56m).
Up Next: Select Badgers will compete at the NCAA West First Round starting May 22 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Qualified athletes will have a chance to punch their ticket to the 2024 NCAA Championships on June 5. The list of qualifiers will be announced later this week.Â
