Lightweight women ready to compete with the nation’s best
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Wisconsin women's lightweight program heads to Mercer Lake to race on Saturday and Sunday at the 2024 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships.
Here are four things to know before the championships.
1. WHERE THEY RANK – The Badgers will look to improve upon their rankings heading into the championships. UW's lightweight eight enters sixth, while both its lightweight four and lightweight double sit at No. 7 in the polls.
2. IRA HISTORY – The Badgers own five lightweight eight national titles, winning five out of six between 2004 and 2009, but last earned a top-three finish in the eight in 2013.
The Badgers' lightweight eight owns sixth-place finishes in each of the last two seasons. While COVID-19 wreaked havoc on participation in 2021 and canceled the event in 2020, UW's lightweight eight was fourth in 2019, while both its lightweight four and lightweight double placed third to help UW place third as a team.
The Badgers took fifth last season as an overall team.
3. DAD VAIL SUCCESS – Four of Wisconsin's five boats won medals at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, New Jersey, that wrapped up May 11. UW's lightweight boats finished second in the varsity four and second varsity four events, while the Badgers' lightweight double placed fifth. UW's lightweight novice eight crew won the freshman/novice eight race against mostly openweight crews.
