WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Wisconsin men's rowing team completed its final race of the season by finishing 18th as a team at the 2024 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship on Sunday at Mercer Lake.

Both UW's varsity eight and second varsity eight won their D Finals, with the varsity clocking 5:49.131 to beat out Oregon State for 19th place. The Badger second varsity eight won their D Final in 5:55.259 to also claim 19th.

Overall, Washington beat out Harvard and California for the varsity eight national title, Princeton and Dartmouth for the second varsity eight, Princeton and California for the third varsity eight championship and Dartmouth and FIT for the varsity four title. Head Coach Beau Hoopman
"We knew going into this year that it would be a tall task to stay up to pace with the top crews at the IRA. The depth and experience of the team is slight compared to even three years ago, but that doesn't mean we can't race.
Setting the example
"Sometimes crews will even surprise you with how racy they can be on the biggest stage. On Friday the 3V became an example for the rest of the team, narrowly missing the semifinal and posting the team's fastest time of the day. Sometimes the wave starts from the bottom of the squad and that can be a wake-up call for the rest of the team. On Sunday every crew responded and had their best piece of the year and for a young team that's a good start.
On the future
"We're returning everyone except for three seniors and two fifth-year coxswains whose efforts through the Covid year helped keep this team together and afloat. Next year the pressure will be on the underclassmen to improve and get us back to baseline; that starts tomorrow at the 1st SOAR session of 2024."
