No. 21 Badgers race past Hoosiers

UW jumps to a 19-2 start en route to 76-64 victory against Indiana

MADISON, Wis. - The No. 21 Wisconsin men's basketball earned a wire-to-wire victory over the Indiana Hoosiers on Tuesday night, winning 76-64 in front of the Kohl Center crowd. Wisconsin collected its 21st-straight victory over the Hoosiers in Madison, a streak that dates back to 2000.

Wisconsin was led by a balanced attack. John Tonje scored a team-high 15 points. Max Klesmit took on playmaking duties, finishing with 13 points and six assists and three steals. Nolan Winter scored an efficient 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Carter Gilmore collected his second-straight game with 10+ points, finishing with 10 points and going a perfect 3-for-3 from deep.

The Badgers rode an electric start, finding themselves on a 24-4 run right out the gate, built up in less than seven minutes of play. Wisconsin started 7-for-8 from deep to ignite the home crowd.

During the Badgers' first-half barrage, six different Badgers connected on 3-pointers and five of the Badger's first six field goal makes were from 3-point range. The Badgers finished the half with a 40-28 lead.

Indiana cut Wisconsin's lead to 11 early in the second half, but the Badgers answered with a 26-14 run to ice the game. Wisconsin won, 76-64, and improved its record to 18-5, with a 8-4 mark in conference play.

The Badgers finished the game 12-for-29 from 3-point range. UW now has 13 games with 10+ made 3-pointers, the most in any season in program history.

Notable:

  • Wisconsin claimed its 21st-consecutive home win over Indiana, extending the longest-ever home winning streak against the Hoosiers.

  • UW's 21 straight home wins over IU ranks as the Badgers' second-longest home win streak against a single opponent, trailing only their active 22-game home win streak against Penn State.

  • The Badgers are 12-1 at home this season.

  • Wisconsin stormed out to a 19-2 lead for the second-straight game at the Kohl Center, also doing so in an 88-55 win over Nebraska (1/25).

  • Klesmit grabbed three steals and dished six assists, both his most in Big Ten play this season. He did not commit a single turnover in the win.

  • After scoring in double-figures for the first time in the Badgers' last time out, Gilmore has now posted 10+ points in back-to-back games.

  • Gilmore had not hit three 3s in a game in his career before doing so in each of the last two games. He's 6-for-8 from distance over the last four days.

Quotable:

Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard on a strong defensive performance: "When the ball did come in [the paint], we were connected and active in digging, crowding the post player, digging the loose [ball], and firing out of that. I thought they did a really good job, especially early, being really connected, active and aggressive in those scenarios."

Max Klesmit on Carter Gilmore: "It's hard to put into words. It's just the work finally showing. We didn't shut down on the extra hours in the gym or in the weight room, whatever you had to do to get yourself better every single day. It's finally coming out and we are all happy."

Nolan Winter on his matchup in the post: "Just a little more confident out there going up against him and not even from a strength aspect but more so just kind of footwork and technique. Going through the Big Ten season last year kind of taught me how to guard the bigger and stronger guys because I know that there's a lot of them."

Kamari McGee on pre-season projections:  "People see a lot of names leave and then see a lot of names come in that they don't really know about. I feel like everybody was just basing it off the names that they saw leave. Everybody can have those opinions off of those names, but you never know what you have, and we knew what we had."
