No. 21 Badgers soar past Hawkeyes

Strong second half lifts UW to season sweep of Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa. - The No. 21 Wisconsin men's basketball team outdueled the Iowa Hawkeyes on the road this Saturday for a 74-63 victory. The Badgers took control of play during the final minutes of the game, coming out on top of a back-and-forth match.

John Tonje led the team with 22 points, adding in six rebounds and four assists as well. John Blackwell aided him with 19 points of his own with six rebounds. Both Tonje and Blackwell scored 10+ points in the second half, putting up 14 and 10 points, respectively, after intermission.

Each team traded blows throughout, with 10 lead changes in the game. With Iowa up 57-54 with nine minutes to go, John Tonje scored the Badger's next 10 points, putting Wisconsin up six with four minutes remaining.

No team led by more than six points until the final two minutes of the game. Wisconsin repeatedly made defensive stops and converted free throws, scoring the final six points of the game, and pushing its lead to double digits.

Wisconsin's double-digit victory came after Iowa had led for most of the game, including leading at half, 39-37. Both teams came out firing in the first half, with Iowa going 16-for-36 on field goal attempts, and Wisconsin going 7-for-17 on 3-point attempts.

Things slowed down in the second, with neither team shooting above 30% from the field in the frame. It was Wisconsin's ability to draw and convert free throws, however, that put them over the edge - going 12-for-14 in the second frame, and 14-17 overall.

Wisconsin passed the rock well, finishing the game with 15 assists to just nine turnovers. Six Badgers finished with multiple assists.

The Badgers are now 19-5 on the season, with a 9-4 mark in conference play.

Notable:

  • Wisconsin held Iowa to a season-low 63 points and just 38.1% shooting overall.

  • Saturday marked just the second time Iowa has been held to 63 points or fewer at home since February of 2016 (Illinois held them to 61 on 3/10/24).

  • Wisconsin held Iowa to just 2 points and zero field goals over the final 4:28 of the game.

  • Dating back to last season, the Badgers are 31-1 when holding their opponent to 70 or fewer points, including a mark of 13-1 this season.

  • UW shot 12-for-35 from 3-point range, the 14th time the Badgers have hit double-digit triples (11-3 in such games), extending the single-season school record. Among major conference teams, Kentucky (14) is the only team other than Wisconsin to post at least 14 games with 10+ triples.

  • Steven Crowl collected three steals in the victory - a career-high.
