Badger celebrate WCHA Final Faceoff Championship

1. LAST TIME OUT
Senior Sarah Wozniewicz scored in the final minute of regulation to lead the top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team to a 4-3 win over No. 4 Minnesota and secure its second-straight WCHA Final Faceoff title at AMSOIL Arena.

Casey O'Brien put together three points with a goal and an assist, including an assist on the Badgers' game-winning goal. Vivian Jungels netted her fourth goal of the season, Maggie Scannell scored her 13th and Wozniewicz secured the game-winner against Minnesota.

UW has now won 11 WCHA tournament titles, and its second-straight WCHA Final Faceoff crown. Wisconsin's 11 titles are the most of any school in the conference. Wisconsin has now won nine-straight games against the Golden Gophers.  This marks the seventh year that UW has won both the WCHA Regular Season and WCHA Final Faceoff and the first since the 2020-21 season.

2. ROAD TO MINNEAPOLIS
This weekend will mark the 19th time the Badgers have made the NCAA tournament, the second-most appearances in NCAA history. Wisconsin has won seven NCAA championships, the most of any team in the country.

This marks the eighth time that UW will host NCAA tournament action at Labahn Arena as UW is 7-0-0 all-time in NCAA tournament contests at LaBahn Arena, outscoring opponents 32-2.

Wisconsin will host Clarkson and Boston University on Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m. before the winner of that game will play the Badgers on Saturday, March 15 at 2 p.m.

Should the Badgers win on Saturday, they'll advance to the Frozen Four that will take place at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis on March 21 and 23 with the winners of the other regional site battles happening across the nation.

3. THREE BADGERS NAMED PATTY KAZMAIER TOP-3 FINALISTS

Wisconsin women's hockey standouts Casey O'Brien, Caroline Harvey and Laila Edwards were named top-three finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, USA Hockey announced on Wednesday.

It marks the second time in 28 years that a single school has produced the three finalists for the highest individual honor in women's college hockey after a trio of Minnesota players were selected as top-three finalists in 2013.

The 2025 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award will be handed out on Saturday, March 22 at the McNamara Alumni Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The ceremony, which will begin at 11:30 a.m. CT, will air live on NHL Network.

Wisconsin is guaranteed to have its sixth Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner, which will tie for the most in the NCAA with Harvard.

4. SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS

The Badgers are 5-1-1 in seven meetings with Clarkson with the last three meetings taking place in the NCAA tournament. UW defeated Clarkson in the 2019 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four and in the NCAA Regional Semifinal round in 2022. Five current Badgers — Casey O’Brien, Katie Kotlowski, Sarah Wozniewicz, Lacey Eden and Marianne Picard — were part of the roster that beat Clarkson 3-1 in the regional semifinal in 2022.

5. BADGERS IMPRESS AT WCHA AWARDS

Wisconsin women's hockey senior Casey O'Brien was named WCHA Player and Forward of the Year, junior Caroline Harvey received Defender of the Year and head coach Mark Johnson earned Coach of the Year honors, as announced at the league's award banquet last week.

O'Brien earned her first WCHA yearly honors after being a finalist for the second-straight season. She also became the second-straight Badger to be named both WCHA Player and Forward of the Year after Kirsten Simm earned both honors last year. Harvey earned her second-straight Defender of the Year honor. Johnson earned his 10th WCHA Coach of the Year award.
