Baggot: Five things to know - 2025 season kicks off

Wisconsin welcomes Miami (OH) under the lights on Thursday evening

As the Wisconsin football team begins its 138th season under the lights Thursday night at Camp Randall Stadium, there is one undisputed truth about the Badgers in 2025.

Their schedule looks ridiculously, uncommonly, savagely difficult.

After hosting Miami (0hio) and Middle Tennessee State, UW plays perennial SEC power Alabama in Tuscaloosa where the Crimson Tide has the best home record over the last 10 seasons at 65-3.

The Badgers usher in a four-game Big Ten Conference gantlet in October when they play at Michigan, where they’ve won three times since 1994 and eight times overall going back to 1893.

UW then hosts archrival Iowa before defending College Football Playoff champion Ohio State comes to town looking to add to a 10-game winning streak that goes back to 2011.

The Badgers close out October with a trip to Oregon, which is 56-8 at Autzen Stadium going back to 2015.

Another bye week gives way to a four-game finishing kick that features a home duel with Washington, which is 4-0 all-time versus the Badgers; a trip to Indiana, which surprised most observers by advancing to the national playoffs last season; and Border Battle rivalry games with Illinois and Minnesota to close out the regular season.

In all, Wisconsin will face six opponents ranked in the preseason top 25 compiled by the Associated Press (No. 3 Ohio State, No. 7 Oregon, No. 8 Alabama, No. 12 Illinois, No. 14 Michigan and No. 20 Indiana). No other Big Ten team is currently slated to play more than five.

Here are five more things to know:

HE CAN SLING IT

Billy Edwards Jr., a senior transfer quarterback from Maryland, began last season with seven straight games throwing for 250-plus yard for the Terrapins. For reference, John Stocco had seven outings of 250 yards are more during his 36 career starts for UW from 2004 to ‘06, but never had more than two straight performances topping 250 yards passing. Stocco still managed to finish with the third-best winning percentage among Wisconsin quarterbacks at 29-7 (.806).

WHERE IT ALL BEGINS, PT. 1

Senior right tackle Riley Mahlman, senior center Jake Renfro and redshirt junior left guard Joe Brunner all return after starting every game for the Badgers in 2024. UW has 111 career starts across the offensive line entering the season. Only Illinois (169), Oregon (143) and Nebraska (123) have more returnees among Big Ten schools.

WHERE IT ALL BEGINS, PT. 2

That talented threesome will lead a group up front that includes senior Davis Heinzen, a transfer from Central Michigan, at left tackle and redshirt freshman Emerson Mandell at right guard. A season ago, the UW offensive line ranked first among Big Ten teams and 10th nationally with 13 quarterback sacks allowed.

A MEETING WITH A MEANING

A victory over Miami (Ohio) would not only give the Badgers a much-needed jolt of momentum, it would give them 29 consecutive wins in non-conference home season openers since 1995 (Colorado) and it would also mean they’ve improved to 17-0 in home night games vs. unranked opponents.

OH, AND ONE MORE THING

Wisconsin opponents went 103-56 (.648) last season. Only Arkansas (106-53, .667) has an overall slate with more wins from 2024 than the Badgers.
