Badgers secure win over Bulldogs
DULUTH, Minn. — The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team defeated No. 8 Minnesota Duluth, 5-1 at AMSOIL Arena this Saturday, securing the majority of points in the series.
Three unanswered goals from the Badgers to begin the game, and another impressive outing from goaltender Ava McNaughton helped UW rebound after a tie in game one.
Alternate captain Kelly Gorbatenko put the Badgers on the board in the first period after an excellent centering pass from Lacey Eden. It was the first Badger lead of the series.
Period two began with a 5:00-minute major penalty call on UW, but it was freshman Adéla Šapovalivová who capitalized, scoring on a short-handed breakaway goal to make it 2-0.
Wisconsin then went on the powerplay a few minutes later, where captain Caroline Harvey tallied another and gave the Badgers a 3-0 lead. It was Harvey's fourth straight game with a goal.
A Bulldog found the back of the net in the third to break up the scoring onslaught from the Badger, but Wisconsin responded when Kirsten Simms put the moves on after receiving a pass from Edwards, and buried one to make it 4-1.
With 3:58 remaining in the final period of play, Edwards made the scoreboard read 5-1, with her seventh goal of the season.
Every Badger skater set to play in the 2026 Winter Olympics, Šapovalivová, Edwards, Harvey and Simms, scored during the game.
The Badgers outshot the Bulldogs 49-17
Goaltender Ava McNaughton stayed in net all 60 minutes and made 16 saves.Â
