Wisconsin looks to improve on fourth place finish
MADISON, Wis. — The No. 15 Wisconsin women's swim and dive team kick off postseason competition at Big Ten Championships from Wednesday to Saturday in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
The Wednesday session will kick off at 4 p.m., as preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and finals start at 5:30 p.m. for each following day. See the full schedule of events here.
Before the Badgers take their mark, here are five things to know:
1. SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Alongside the No. 15 Badgers, six other Big Ten schools sit in the Top 25 of the CSCAA poll. The women rank fifth amongst conference foes, falling short of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio State and USC at fourth, sixth, 11th and 12th, respectively. Minnesota falls at the end of the pack in 25th heading into conference championships.
2. A LOOK BACK AT LAST YEAR
Last year, the Wisconsin women placed fourth overall for its fourth consecutive season, collecting 849 points overall. Ohio State edged out Indiana for the first place title, finishing with 1313.5 points to Indiana's 1255.5. Michigan rounded out the top three with 1149.5 points. Now-graduate Phoebe Bacon was named Swimmer of the Championships after claiming three victories across the meet.
3. B1G LEADERS
Maggie Wanezek continues to lead the conference in the 200 back with a 1:48.39 time for an NCAA A cut. The sophomore holds the No. 3 time in the 100 back with an NCAA A cut as well. Freshman Brooke Corrigan leads the Badgers with the No. 3 time in the 200 breast, with Hazal Ozkan and Bridget McGann right behind at No. 4 and No. 5 with NCAA B cuts. Corrigan also checks in at No. 4 in the 100 breast, with McGann shortly behind in No. 7 with NCAA B cuts. Junior Maddie Waggoner sits No. 5 in the 1650 free, with Blair Stoneburg checking in at No. 7.
4. DIVE RIGHT IN
Ryane Neal, Vivian Kinnard, Julia Herring and Zara Karimi look to make waves in the diving well at Big Tens. All four qualified for NCAA Zones, marking the most divers the program has sent since 2016. Neal and Kinnard earned qualifying scores in all three events. Herring qualified on the 1-meter and 3-meter, and Karimi qualified on the 1-meter and platform.
