UW outlasts Maryland in game one
MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin softball team outlasted Maryland in its home opener, scoring two runs in the seventh to walk it off at Goodman Diamond and take game one of the weekend, 6-5.Â
Senior Emily Bojan came around to score on a ground ball to win the battle and complete the comeback, as junior Alivia Bark was credited with the game-winning RBI.Â
After the Terrapins (13-18, 1-9 B1G) plated a run early on, the Badgers' (17-11, 3-4 B1G) offense found a spark from the bottom of the order, setting the table for the top in the third inning. Bojan dropped down a sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position with one out. In the next at bat, junior Hilary Blomberg launched UW's first home run of the year at Goodman Diamond to make it 3-1.Â
In the fourth, redshirt freshman Jaclyn Showalter tallied her sixth big fly of the season—blasting a solo shot to the opposite field.Â
Maryland responded with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, stringing together a trio of hits to cut into the Badgers' advantage.
The Terrapins came up clutch in the seventh after shutting down the UW offense in the bottom half of the sixth, banging a double off of the wall to tie the game. Maryland followed it up with a sacrifice fly—taking a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh.Â
Wisconsin rallied late, as sophomore Hannah Conger led off the seventh with a base hit to right field. Bojan followed it up with a hit of her own to extend her on-base streak. Blomberg wrapped up her day with her fourth hit of the game, becoming just the second Badger to do so this season.Â
The Badgers went on to win an obstruction review, tying the game at 5-5 to set up the middle of the lineup. Bark sent a ground ball to first base, as Bojan hustled into home plate and walked it off for UW.Â
