MADISON, Wis. -- The Big Ten Indoors opened Friday with doubles play at theat the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility and the MAC in East Lansing, Minn.
Senior Michael Dierberger paired up with freshman Billy Bertha in the first match of the doubles A bracket against Czerwinski/Souza of Illinois. The duo put up a valiant effort, but the Badgers eventually fell to the Fighting Illini 8-4.
In the consolation bracket, Dierberger/Bertha defeated Sanborn/Reitz of Northwestern in a close 8-5 match. The pair then ended their run in doubles by losing 8-2 to Peterson/Dehn of Minnesota.
Another senior/freshman duo of Luke Rassow-Kantor and Chris Freeman hit the court today, coming out victorious in their first round of doubles. The two defeated the mixed doubles team of Hadash (Minnesota) and Roth (Illinois) in an 8-5 win.
Rassow-Kantor/Freeman continued their success against the Hawkeyes in the second round which earned them an 8-4 victory. However in the quarterfinals, Penn State forced the Badgers to a 7-5 tiebreak. The Nittany Lions proved too much for the duo as the Badgers lost in a tight 9-8(5) match. Penn State eventually won the doubles B bracket after beating Northwestern 8-6.
Singles play will begin tomorrow and continue through Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m. each day.
