MADISON, Wis. -- A pair of top-three relay finishes have the Wisconsin women’s swimming and diving team in third place after the opening day of the Texas Invitational.

The Badger men, meanwhile, stand fifth after the first day of competition at the Lee and Joel Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.

On the women’s side, the foursome of Sara Goff, Maggie Meyer, Ruby Martin and Rosie Morahan combined to open the finals session with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet clocked a season-best mark of 1:31.79 to earn the Badgers NCAA championships consideration in the event.

Arizona won the race in 1:30.87, with Texas second in 1:31.27.

The evening’s final event, the 400-yard medley relay, also saw the Badgers take third place, as Meyer and Morahan combined with Libby Brooks and Karlyn Hougan to clock an NCAA consideration time of 3:41.36.

The mark, Wisconsin’s best of the season, was just off the winning pace of Arizona’s ‘A’ team (3:34.34) and the Wildcats’ ‘B’ squad (3:41.36).

Individually, Meyer clocked in at 22.58 to score an impressive second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and grab NCAA consideration in the process. The runner-up showing marked the first time in 13 races this season that Meyer has not claimed a win in an individual event.

Former Arizona national champion and American record-holder Lara Jackson took the win in 22.44.

On the men’s side, sophomore Brett Nagle was the Badgers’ lone championship finalist on the meet’s first day, as he finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:31.54.

Nagle clocked an NCAA consideration cut of 4:28.29 during the morning preliminaries session.

The Badgers’ quartet in the men’s 200 free relay finished sixth, with the foursome of Phil Davies, Conner Andrews, Luke Lengfeld and Chris Nemeth clocking in at 1:22.75.

UW then closed the first night of competition with a seventh-place showing in the 400 medley relay. Derrick O’Donnell, Eric Johnson, Chuck Allison and Davies composed the Badgers’ squad in that race, finishing in 3:20.94.

The Texas Invitational continues Friday, with prelims set to begin at 10 a.m. and the finals session scheduled for 6 p.m.
