MADISON, Wis.-- Saturday’s dual meet between Wisconsin and instate rival Green Bay featured some history made as well as some history repeated.
Sophomore Beckie Thompson broke a 12-year-old UW Natatorium record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.86, a performance that led the way for the Badgers’ 17th dual-meet sweep of the Phoenix in as many seasons.
Wisconsin’s women won by a score of 197-103, while the men’s team also won by a decisive 189.5-108.5 margin.
The Badgers’ victories included individual event wins by 21 different athletes, as well as a sweep of the four relays contested. Four of the 21 athletes won multiple races.
Thompson, who recorded an NCAA consideration time with her win in the 50-yard freestyle, also claimed victory in 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.51. Senior Candice Peak also took home two titles, winning the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 56.01 and the 200-yard backstroke in 1:59.95.
Senior Derrick O’Donnell and freshman Dan Lester also earned multiple wins in the dual. O’Donnell won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 50.63 and 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:52.73. Lester claimed the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.12, a whole six seconds faster than the second-place finisher, and also won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 49.94.
The UW was victorious in the diving portion of the meet, as well. Freshman Roxanne Fitter won the women’s 1-meter competition with a score of 272.78, and senior Al Morrison claimed the men’s 1-meter competition at 319.80.
Freshman Michael Ross also put on a spectacular performance in the 3-meter competition, as he was just 17 points shy of the Badgers’ school record with his score of 364.21.
The Badgers will now prepare to host the Big Ten Quad Duals, which are set for next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29-30, at the UW Natatorium.
