SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Wisconsin men’s tennis team wrapped up the singles qualifying round at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championship Friday morning. Redshirt freshman Alexander Teppert (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and freshman Alex Robles (Naples, Fla.) competed for the Badgers.
Teppert defeated Notre Dame’s Spencer Talmadge, 6-4, 0-6, 6-1, in his first match. He then posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Detroit’s Alex Latosinsky in the second round before falling to Notre Dame’s Sean Tan, 6-1, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Robles won a three-set match over Cleveland State’s John Haley, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to advance to the second round, but then fell, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, to Michigan State’s John Stratton to end his tournament run in singles play.
Four Badgers are slated to compete in the singles main draw, which is split between two venues. Action began Friday morning at the Lakeland Athletic Center and the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Senior Marek Michalicka (Ricany, Czech Republic) is the overall No. 2 seed in singles play, and sophomore Billy Bertha (Whitefish Bay, Wis.), freshman Petr Satral (Klatovy, Czech Republic) and sophomore Ricardo Martin (Bogota, Colombia) join Michalicka in representing UW in the main draw.
Three Badgers are matched up against Big Ten opponents in the singles main draw as Martin plays No. 1 seed Chase Buchanan of Ohio State. Satral faces Northwestern's Josh Graves, and Michalicka plays Michigan's Justin Rossi. Bertha is scheduled to take on Notre Dame's Tyler Davis in the main draw.
The doubles main draw also begins on Friday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion with competition kicking off at 6 p.m.
In doubles play, the pair of Bertha and Martin will take on Western Michigan's Ross Vanderploeg and Michael Basha. Robles and Teppert face Michigan State’s Ronnie Hulewicz and Denis Bogator, and Michalicka and Satral meet Matt Kuelker and Matt Ford of Cleveland State in the first round of doubles play.
