MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's soccer team (1-3-2) recorded its first win of the season with a 1-0 shutout victory over Milwaukee (2-3-2) at the McClimon Complex on Sunday.

 Fast Facts
• Nosbusch notched UW's goal, the 14th of her career
• Flannery tallied the assist, the fifth of her career
• UW outshot Milwaukee 13-7

The Badgers outshot Milwaukee, 13-7, with junior co-captain Laurie Nosbusch tallying the game-winning goal and Wisconsin's second goal of the season early in the first half.

Junior defender Meghan Flannery (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) served a perfect corner kick to Nosbusch, who was positioned near the back post. The Mequon, Wis., native headed the ball into the upper left corner of Milwaukee's net to seal the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.

"We knew coming into this game we needed a win, and we got it," Flannery said. "We wanted to prove that we can have success over a good team like Milwaukee."

In the second half, UW outshot Milwaukee, 8-2. Of those eight shots, four were on-goal, including two promising attempts by freshman Kodee Williams (Toronto, Ontario).

With 22 minutes left in the second half, Williams shielded the ball, implementing a quick pull back move to put the Milwaukee defense behind her. With just Milwaukee goalkeeper Leslie Deebach between her and the back of the net, Williams fired the ball near post, but it was saved by Deebach.

In the 81st minute, Williams used her speed to get around the Milwaukee defense and ran onto a through-ball played by Nosbusch. However this time, the freshman ripped a shot far post, missing by just inches to prevent the Badgers from obtaining the 2-0 advantage.

"I think Kodee and Laurie did a great job of getting forward and finding each other," Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins said.

"Kodee got through twice and created two or three great opportunities. For her being a freshman it is nice to see. I think anytime you get a win especially over a team like Milwaukee is a great start since you have yet to get a result.  It will help us build, and it is a much better feeling than Friday night."

In the UW victory, Wisconsin goalkeeper Michele Dalton tallied two saves, while Deebach made seven. Deebach is now 1-2-2 in goal for the Panthers and Dalton is 1-2-1 for the Badgers.

The in-state rivalry game was a physical match, with each team tallying fouls in the double digits.  Wisconsin finished with 16 fouls while the Panthers added 10.

The Badgers will pack their suitcases for a five-game road trip with its first stop in Tennessee. The Cardinal and White will take on Tennessee on Sept. 17 and Vanderbilt on Sept. 19.

Wisconsin notes
• The last time the Badgers beat UWM was in 2005 when Wisconsin notched a 4-0 shutout victory over the Panthers.
• From 2006-2009, the Badgers and the Panthers met four times. In those four meetings, Milwaukee boasted a 3-0-1 record over Wisconsin.
• Nosbusch's goal was the Badgers' second goal of the season and her 14th goal and sixth game-winning goal of her career.
• Flannery notched her first assist of the 2010 season and her fifth career-assist.
• In four games, Dalton is 1-2-1 for the Badgers with 15 saves on the season.
