GREEN BAY, Wis.-- Fighting strong winds and limited shots, the Wisconsin men's soccer team was shutout 2-0 in Green Bay Wednesday night. With the loss, the Badgers fall to 7-5-2, while the Phoenix improve to 7-5-1.
After winning the coin toss, Green Bay chose to play the first half with the wind at their backs. A choice that proved to the right one as the Phoenix scored the eventual game-winner just nine minutes into play. A wind-aided corner kick from Stuart Grable was converted into a header by Alonso Flores to give Green Bay a 1-0 lead.
The remainder of the first 45 minutes played out quietly. UW failed to get a shot off in the first half, while Green Bay recorded nine. UW goalie Max Jentsch recorded four saves in the first 45 minutes of play.
"We had the same thing against Michigan State," head coach John Trask commented. "We had the wind in the first half and we got a goal."
The Badgers looked to turn the tide in the second half, outshooting the Phoenix 7-2, but it was not enough to get the win.
Green Bay picked up its second goal at the 76:07 mark to put the game out of reach for the Badgers.
UW finished with seven shots, two on goal, while Green Bay recorded 11 shots, including six on goal.
Wisconsin continues action on the road on Sunday when it travels to Northwestern for Big Ten Conference play. Game time is 1 p.m. in a live broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
