MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed against the University of Hawaii at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex in Honolulu, Hawaii on Saturday afternoon.

The women’s squad picked up its third win of the season beating Hawaii 172-123, while the men lost by a score of 163.5-123.5.

“I wasn’t too concerned about the score,” head coach Whitney Hite said of his teams’ performances. “It was the first time racing since the Texas Invitational, which was about six weeks ago, so it was good to get back in the racing mode. It highlighted what we need to fine tune. Overall, it was a great start to second semester.”

The women claimed 10 individual first-place finishes and two relay first-place finishes against Hawaii. Wisconsin swept the 1000 free, as Danielle Beckwith touched in first with a time of 10:00.04. Monika Stitski, Jennah Haney and Katie Delaney finished second, third and fourth for the Badgers, respectively. Beckwith also posted the top time of 4:57.17 as the Badgers also swept the 500 free.

Laura Miller claimed first place in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.25 and first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.86. Karissa Kruszewski won the 200 butterfly, edging out teammate Rebecka Palm for a time of 2:06.31. While Palm finished second, she took a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.84.

Wisconsin’s Ashley Wanland and Beckie Thompson continued their domination in the pool, as they finished first in both their respective races against Hawaii. Wanland clocked in at 1:02.42 in the 100 breast and 2:16.29 in the 200 breast. Thompson had a time of 22.86 in the 50 free, before posting a time of 50.80 in the 100 free.

On the men’s side, Michael Weiss had a fantastic day in the water as he claimed two first-place finishes. In the 200 free, Weiss finished in 1:40.79 and was followed up by teammate Damon Zito in second place with a time of 1:42.34. In the 500 free, Weiss posted a time of 4:34.59 and fellow badger Andrew Nielsen came in second with a time of 4:36.80.

Daniel Lester won three individual events for the Badgers. He won the 100 and 200 butterfly with times of 49.18 and 1:49.82, respectively. He also posted the top time of 1:52.45 in the 200 IM.

The outing to the Aloha State also served as a winter training trip for the teams, as the Badgers spent two weeks conditioning.

“Training went really well,” coach Hite said. “We’ve had really great days of training, with consistent and heavy loads. I’m very pleased with the results and it was nice to get back into the racing mode after training for so long without any competition. We have a two-day meet against USC coming up and they’re one of the best teams in the country, which will help us fine tune things from there.”

The Badgers compete against Southern California on Wednesday and Thursday in Los Angeles, before returning home for senior day on Saturday against Green Bay.
