MADISON, Wis. – The third time wasn’t the charm for the Wisconsin men’s soccer team as the Badgers lost, 2-0, to No. 11 Indiana for the first time in three years and the first ever for Wisconsin head coach John Trask on Saturday night in Bloomington, Ind.
The Badgers dropped their second Big Ten match and fell to 3-5-3 overall (0-2-0 Big Ten), while the Hoosiers improved to 9-2-1 on the season and 2-0-0 in the Big Ten.
After losing 2-0 to UW last year in Madison, and tying the Badgers 1-1 (2OT) in 2010 in Bloomington, the Hoosiers returned this year with a dominating performance.
Indiana found the back of the net just ten minutes into the match, setting the tone for the night. The quick-scoring strike came from sophomore Eriq Zavaleva, who added to his conference-leading goal total by pounding in a shot off a Hoosier corner kick. The AJ Corrado service found the head of Nikita Kotlov, who flicked the ball on to Zavaleta, who then quickly finished with a goal from three yards out.
While Wisconsin kept Indiana off the board for the rest of the first half, Corrado and Zavaleta hooked up again just three minutes into the second half to extend the Hoosier lead to 2-0. This time, Corrado found Zavaleta deep down the field and Zavaleta chipped a shot over UW goalkeeper Chase Rau after gathering in the pass.
The Indiana defense made sure their 2-0 lead held for the rest of the game, blanketing the Wisconsin offense, only allowing eight shots for the game.
The Badgers have been shut out in both of their Big Ten matches so far this year, losing to Penn State, 1-0 on Sept. 21.
The Hoosier’s solid defense was matched by an opportunistic offense, as IU became just the second team to put two goals on the scoreboard in regulation against Wisconsin since Sept. 9.
The Badgers will return home to face Milwaukee at the McClimon Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
