MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's soccer team played a strong defensive game, but couldn't keep Portland off the board indefinitely as the Pilots scored in the final minutes of regulation to force a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon in Portland, Ore.
"The team definitely showed a lot of improvements from Friday night's game," head coach John Trask commented. "We knew the start of the season would be tough and for us to come out of these first three games with a 1-1-1 record is not bad."
"It will be good to return home and we need to get ready to get some work done this upcoming weekend."
After conceding the first goal of the game in the last two matches, the Badgers (1-1-1) were the first ones to get on the board in the 76th minute. Junior Chris Prince was awarded a penalty kick and made sure UW's first PK of the season counted.
However, the Badgers were unable to hold onto their lead long as the Pilots (2-1-1) capitalized on a one-on-one break just nine minutes later. Portland striker Ricardo Carrillo received a pass from Michael Escobar and placed it past Badger keeper Chase Rau.
The lone goal was the only blemish for Rau (1-1-1) on the day, as he made a total of five saves in the match, including one in the second overtime. Wisconsin's defense was busy in front of the freshman goalkeeper, with Portland attempting a total of 21 shots.
The two 10-minute overtime periods were played without much fanfare as neither team could muster a great scoring chance.
Coach Trask was forced to sit out the game after receiving a red card in Friday night's contest and assistant coaches Keith Thiemeyer, Phil Presser and Ryan Hopkins guided the team.
"Not being able to be on the bench, I thought Keith, Phil and Ryan did a fantastic job of making in-game adjustments. All three are great coaches and I had complete confidence in them leading the team today."
"The UW Alumni Association had a large contingency of fans show up to the games over the weekend," coach Trask added. "It always seems like no matter where you go, you're going to find alumni from Wisconsin and it was great for our guys to play on the road with Badger fans cheering them on."
The men's soccer team returns to Madison to open its home schedule Friday, Sept. 7, against Florida International University at 7 p.m. Wisconsin will then host Georgetown on Sunday, Sept. 9, at noon.
