The Wisconsin men's soccer team could not withstand a late FIU charge, as the Panthers netted two second-half goals to spoil the Badgers' home opener, 3-1, Friday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
"It was a fantastic crowd, great support from the community and students, the setup of the stadium was great; we just didn't seem to bring our A-game," head coach John Trask said. "We have some tough questions to ask ourselves...to give up 10 goals in four games, you can't win in college soccer doing that."
A crowd of more than 500 were on hand to help Wisconsin (1-2-1) open its home schedule against FIU (4-0-0), including a large contingent of supporters sitting in the new seats located at field-level on the east side of the pitch.
FIU's Quentin Albrecht provided the tie-breaking goal for the Panthers in the game's 69th minute to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
The goal seemed to deflate the Badgers, who had equalized the game late in the first half.
After finding themselves on their heels against a rejuvenated Badger team coming out of halftime, Albrechts's goal seemed to steady the Panthers.
The game was essentially put out of reach when the Panthers' Daniel Gonzalez scored from just inside the box to give FIU a commanding 3-1 lead in the 78th minute.
Neither team had an obvious scoring chance before FIU's Gonzalo Frechilla ripped a deep shot past Wisconsin keeper Chase Rau to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes to go in the first. The Badgers defended an initial corner kick well, but saw the ball sneak out to an uncovered Frechilla.
The Badgers hung around for the next few minutes, dodging a bullet when FIU's Nicolas Rodriguez broke away from the UW defense and found himself one-on-one with Rau, before narrowly missing his shot wide left.
The possibility of a 2-0 deficit seemed to lead to a higher level of play from the Badgers, as they turned a corner kick into a goal of their own.
AJ Cochran pounded in a header from point-blank range from a brilliant delivery off the corner by Chris Prince. The goal evened the score at 1-1 going into half and seemed to provide the Badgers with new life.
The Badgers maintained control out of halftime and had some notable scoring chances that they couldn't capitalize on, setting the stage for FIU's late run.
Anders Kristensen's shot rolled just left of the net 11 minutes into the second half, and Chris Prince missed a chance of his own to put the Badgers ahead when his rocket from outside the box was just off target.
The Badgers season continues with a match against No. 13 Georgetown at the McClimon Soccer Complex at noon on Sunday. UW students with valid student IDs receive free entry to the game.
