Tom Barlow and
Mark Segbers continued the trend of impressive freshman play, including Segbers scoring a late goal to force overtime, but the Wisconsin men’s soccer team was ultimately defeated 3-2 by Rutgers in its Big Ten opener at the McClimon Complex in Madison on Friday night.
After Rayon Gibbs scored in the 81st minute and gave the Scarlet Knights (3-2-0) a late 2-1 lead, it felt as if time was running out on the Badgers (1-4-0). But, Segbers rose to the occasion and forced overtime with his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 89th minute.
In extra time, it was Rutgers who came out on top, as JP Correa netted his second goal of the game and lifted his team to the overtime victory on a score at the 97:16 mark of the first overtime period.

“We had some opportunities,” team captain Drew Conner said. “It felt like one of those games where we just had to keep pushing. You knew you were going to get four or five shots on goal that the goalie was going to save, but eventually that goal was going to come.
“We just kept pushing, and we finally got that tying goal. Unfortunately, we just weren’t able to finish it off.”
With 1,610 fans in attendance on a chilly night in Madison, there was never a dull moment as Wisconsin hosted Rutgers in what marked its first match as a new Big Ten Conference member. Barlow got the crowd going early, scoring the game’s first goal in the 11th minute off an assist from Segbers to make it 1-0.
The Badgers remained dominant for the rest of the first half and took a lead into the break for the first time this season.
The second half proved a different story, however, as Correa of Rutgers tied it up with his first goal of the game off the assist from Brandon Tetro in the 52nd minute. It wasn't until the 81st minute that the Scarlet Knights took their first lead of the game, after Gibbs scored off a powerful kick from the far corner.
Down 2-1 with just 1:59 remaining in regulation, Segbers tied it up off the assist from David Caban. Segbers leads the Badgers with nine points on four goals through five games this season, followed by Barlow’s five points.
“It’s awesome to have him up there (on the front line) with me,” Segbers said of fellow St. Louis, Missouri, freshman Barlow. “I feed off his energy. We know how to get each other going and get the intensity up.”
Going into overtime, the Badgers had both the momentum and crowd support in their favor. Strong goalkeeping from both sides highlighted the beginning of extra time, but it was finally brought to an end by Correa and his game-winner off the assist from Sang Lee at the 97:16 mark.
Casey Beyers made his first start of the season at goalkeeper for UW and did not disappoint, recording a career-high nine saves on the night—three in overtime alone. RU goalkeeper David Greczek recorded seven saves in the win.
Wisconsin looks to bounce back next Friday, Sept. 19, hosting St. John's at the McClimon Complex.
