COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Despite holding Maryland scoreless through the first half, Wisconsin was unable to match a pair of goals in the second half by the Terrapins and fell in a 2-0 final at Ludwig Field in College Park, Maryland, on Friday night.

Often able to turn it on in the second half, the Badgers (1-5-1, 0-2-0 Big Ten) were shut out for just the first time all season by the Terrapins (3-3-2, 1-1-1 Big Ten). Entering the match, Wisconsin had scored nine of its 10 goals this season in the second frame, but the late momentum of UMD fueled by a crowd of 4,165 was too much.

"I thought we played a very good first half," UW head coach John Trask said. "Maryland is a team that was in the national championship last year. We're closing the gap, but we're not there yet. In many ways, I was very pleased.

"To see the growth of this team over the last few games has been very encouraging. We're learning some tough lessons, but I know this group will stay together. The quality of the environment we faced tonight was awesome. This is what Big Ten soccer is supposed to be, getting 4,000 people out on a Friday night."

Both teams played to a competitive and scoreless first half. Despite Maryland recording six shots and six corner kicks through the first frame alone, the Badgers held firm and were able to head into the halftime break tied.

Michael Sauers helped the Terappins finally breakthrough in the second half, scoring in the 53rd minute on a right-footed strike from eight yards out. Eric Carbajal and Jeroen Meefout were each credited with assists on the score.

Just six minutes later, Maryland added to its lead at the 58:41 mark, as Dan Metzger made it a 2-0 game scoring with the header off of a free kick taken by Mikey Ambrose.

The Badgers were unable to respond and create many offensive opportunities in the second half, finishing the night with a season-low four shots.

Less than four minutes remaining, Adam Lauko came up with the lone shot of the second half for Wisconsin, but missed wide on a header after Drew Conner set him up with the corner kick. Lauko tied for a game-high two shots, while Matej Radonic and Brian Hail finished with one shot each.

Columbia, Maryland, native Casey Beyers made the start at goalkeeper for Wisconsin and finished with two saves.

Wisconsin looks to bounce back on the road next week when it travels to face in-state rival Marquette on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. in Milwaukee.
