PRINCETON, N.J.
-- For first-year head coach Danny Westerman, the fall season is about improving depth and growing together as a team. By those measures, the team's performance at the Princeton Invitational must be viewed as a success.

UW's effort in the three-day tournament was highlighted by the doubles team of Alexander Kokorev and Darius Mackenzie finishing off the Black bracket with an 8-0 shutout in Sunday's championship. The duo dispatched Princeton's Jonathan Carcione and Mo El Tonbari to cap off a 5-0 weekend together.

"I was extremely happy with the way we closed the event today," head coach Danny Westerman said. "I was especially pleased with our doubles play. The guys incorporated a lot of things we are talking about in practice in the matches this weekend."

Freshman Alan Sweet also took home a championship on Sunday, rallying for a thrilling, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, win over Boston College's Aiden McNulty. Overall, Sweet won four matches in three days to win the Cordish Flight.

"It was exciting to see Sweet save match points and win his bracket in his first ever college tournament," Westerman added.

UW had a couple other shots at taking home championships Sunday, but Kokorev and fellow senior Jakhongir Jalolov suffered final match defeats. Jalolov, who ousted the top seed of the bracket in the semifinals, ran out of steam against second-seeded Vaidik Munshaw of St. John's, 7-6 (3), 6-1. Kokorev was also bumped by a St. John's player, Lucas Hejhal, who had also taken down UW's Lamar Remy in the semis.

Mackenzie fought his way back to win the Lenz Flight consolation bracket with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Will Turner of Boston College.

Overall, the Badgers finished the tournament with a 23-7 singles record and a 17-3 record in doubles action.

"We definitely are a better team today than where we were after the Milwaukee Classic. We still have plenty of work to do but we are certainly on the right track."

The UW men will return to action in two weeks for the ITA Regionals in South Bend, Indiana, beginning on Oct. 22.

PRINCETON, N.J. -- After a three-week hiatus, the Wisconsin men's tennis team showed no signs of rust on the first day of the Princeton Invitational. All eight of the participating Badgers posted singles victories on Friday, going a perfect 8-0 in their respective brackets. On the doubles courts, UW was nearly perfect, finishing 9-1 on the opening day.

"I was very pleased with the guys today," head coach Danny Westerman said. "We played with a ton of energy and it really helped us in some tight situations. We had three great weeks of practice and we are starting to see some of our hard work paying off."

Sophomore Darius Mackenzie opened his weekend with a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 win over Marist's Timo Tanzer to move on to the quarterfinals of the top-flight Lenz bracket. Jose Carranza also advanced to the Lenz round of eight after a thrilling 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-7 win over Monmouth's Vidit Vaghela.

On opposite sides of the Tiger bracket, Alexander Kokorev and Lamar Remy each notched victories over opponents from Binghamton. Kokorev rallied back from a first-set loss to knock off Sid Hazarika, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7, while Remy dispatched Elliot Hureau, 6-3, 6-1.

Jakhongir Jalolov and John Zordani both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Nassau bracket. Jalolov gutted out a 6-1, 3-6, 11-9 nail-biter over Marist's Fredrik Bjerke. Zordani eased past Mo El Tonbari of Princeton, 6-4, 6-2.

In the Cordish Flight, freshman Alan Sweet grabbed an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over Georgetown's Jack Murphy and Elliott Sprecher advanced with a 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 win over Carlos Moreno of Marist.

On the doubles side, Jalolov and Remy went three-for-three on Friday, advancing to the semifinals of the Orange bracket. Carranza and Zordani won a pair of matches in the same flight before a tie-breaker setback in the quarterfinals to the duo of Kyle Childree and Hank Workman from Boston College, 8-7 (3).

In the Black bracket, Sweet and Sprecher had a perfect day, winning three matches to reach the semifinals. On the other side, Mackenzie and Kokorev posted a pair of victories before rain halted their quarterfinal match. The Badgers twosome is tied 7-7 but leading 4-2 in the tie-breaker against Grant Patterson and Michael Sienko of Army. That match, along with the subsequent rounds will resume on Saturday.
