MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's golf team heads west to compete in the Gifford Collegiate Championship, Nov. 2-4, at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California, which marks the Badgers' final tournament of the fall season.
UCLA hosts the event, which also features Colorado, Harvard, Marquette, South Florida, Tennessee, Washington and the Badgers.
According to Golfweek's rankings, four of the schools appear in the top 50: No. 22 South Florida, No. 29 UCLA, No. 44 Tennessee and No. 47 Washington.
Wisconsin took part in The Grove Intercollegiate, Oct. 25-27, as the team placed eighth. Unfortunately, the tournament was cut short after two rounds due to heavy rain, so the team was unable to build on its improvement from Day 1 to Day 2 in the third round. The Badgers (+28, 306-298=604) shot a 306 in Round 1 before dropping their score to 298 in the second round, which was the fifth-best 18-hole output of the day.
Eddie Wajda III had easily his best performance of the year at The Grove Intercollegiate. The sophomore was 1-over which put him in fifth and marked a new career-best tournament finish. Wajda's second-round 72 was a season-low for 18 holes and his 36-hole 145 was his best two-round score of the year. He (T20, T24, 5) is tied with Michael Abrahamson (T6, T3, T14) for the most top-25 finishes on the team with three.
Ben Skogen leads UW in scoring average with 73.55 strokes per round, while Wajda trails by a mere .09 strokes at 73.64. Jordan Hahn (74.09) is next, followed by Abrahamson (74.15) and Johnny Decker (75.33).
At last year's Gifford Collegiate Championship, the Badgers (368-374-361=1103) took ninth at 38-over. UCLA (-15, 355-346-349=1050) earned the tournament crown, barely edging out USC (-12, 353-345-355=1053).
The Gifford Collegiate Championship takes place at La Costa Resort, which has two par-72 golf courses—a narrow 7,172-yard Champions course designed by legendary links architect Dick Wilson and a more spacious 6,996-yard Legends course designed by Wilson and fellow renowned architect Joe Lee.
