MADISON, Wis. – After a single-game road trip to Indiana last Saturday, the Wisconsin men's soccer team returns home to close out its regular season against Northwestern on Wednesday. The match at the McClimon Complex is set to kick off at 7 p.m. (CT).
The Badgers (4-10-3, 1-3-3 Big Ten) battled the Hoosiers through 90 minutes, but were unable to answer a second-half goal from Austin Panchot.
Christopher Mueller led the Badgers in shots with two, one of them on goal.
Matej Radonic,
Mark Segbers and
Mike Catalano recorded one shot apiece as well.
Returning to Madison, the Badgers look to tally their first win at home of the season by riding the energy of their home crowd.
The Wildcats (7-7-2, 4-3-0 Big Ten) head to Madison after knocking off Penn State to keep their Big Ten regular season title chances alive. A header goal from junior defender Nathan Dearth in the 81st minute proved the difference, as Northwestern took home the win from University Park.
A win by Northwestern on Wednesday provides the Wildcats a chance to clinch at least a share of the Big Ten title, depending on the results of the other matches within the conference.
Despite the offensive effort put forth by Dearth, he ranks only fifth on the team with four points. The Wildcats are led by senior forward Calistri, who tops all players with 11 points from three goals and five assists. Junior forward Mike Roberge is second with seven points, while sophomore forward Elo Ozumba (6 points) and junior midfielder Jeffrey Hopson (5 points) are third and fourth, respectively.
Wisconsin leads the all-time series with Northwestern 26-11-5, however the most recent pair of games have been won by the Wildcats. The last time the two teams met in Madison was in October of 2012, when the Badgers tied then No. 24 Northwestern to a 0-0 draw in double overtime.
In the most recent match last season, the then No. 16 Wildcats surpassed the Badgers in Evansville, Illinois, with the help of a pair of goals from then-junior Joey Calistri. Despite the Badgers outshooting the Wildcats 11-5, the Wisconsin offense was unable to capitalize offensively to combat the pair of goals.
Wednesday's game will be streamed live on BTN Plus at 7 p.m.
