EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Wisconsin men's tennis team got back on track in conference play with a thrilling 4-3 win over Big Ten rival Michigan State on Saturday.
After dropping the initial doubles point, the Badgers rallied to earn four singles victories and clinch the match.
"It was a great team win today," head coach Greg Van Emburgh said. "I was really proud of the guys and how committed they were to today's victory."
In doubles play, the Spartans proved to be a formidable opponent, dispatching the Cardinal and White on Courts 1 and 3. The Badgers responded to the setback with determination, however, and ultimately fought back to take the dual.
On Court 1, Josef Dodridge was unable to overcome MSU's Gijs Linders and fell by a final score of 6-2, 6-4. Jakhongir Jalalov was also unable to earn a victory on Court 2 and was defeated by Brett Forman of the Spartans, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Michael Sinha cruised to victory over his Michigan State foe on Court 6, sweeping Michael Dube in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. On Court 5, Jose Maria Martin De Oliva Carranza similarly swept his opponent by a final score of 6-2, 6-3.
After winning his first set in a back-and-forth tiebreak, John Zordani carried that momentum into the second set and ultimately took the match on Court 4, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
Freshman Lamar Remy then clinched the dual match for the Badgers with a competitive three-set victory on Court 3, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4.
"When Lamar clinched the match at 3-3, his true colors came out at the right time," Van Emburgh said. "I'm extremely proud of him and the way he stepped up his game."
Wisconsin seeks its second consecutive conference win when UW travels to Ann Arbor for a match against Michigan on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT).
