CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The 2015 season has been one of transition for the Badgers men's tennis team with underclassmen playing big roles and learning under fire. Thursday's opening-round loss to Iowa at the Big Ten tournament will serve as a teaching point for head coach Greg Van Emburgh. Ninth-seeded Wisconsin fell behind early and never recovered, falling 4-0 to No. 8 seed Iowa in Champaign, Illinois.
The Badgers opened tournament action by dropping the match's doubles point. On Court 1, Josef Dodridge and Jose Maria Martin De Oliva Carranza battled through a competitive match, falling by a final score of 8-6.
Alexander Kokorev and Jakhongir Jalalov were unable to conclude their match on Court 2 after Lamar Remy and John Zordani were defeated by Iowa's Jake Jacoby and Andres Estenssoro, 8-4.
In singles play, the Cardinal and White fell in three straight matches to conclude the contest. On court 2, Jalalov fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, while Tomas Pitra also dropped his dual by a final score of 6-1, 6-2.
UW Sportsmanship Award winner Carranza fought point-for-point with the Hawkeyes' Jake Jacoby, but ultimately lost the match, 6-4, 6-4. Following Carranza's defeat, Dodridge, Kokorev and Zordani's contests were suspended.
Dodridge, a second-team All-Big Ten selection, had a second-set lead when his match was concluded early. After dropping the opening stanza 6-2, he was up a break at 4-2 in set number two.
