MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's tennis team closed out tournament play at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Sunday with a 4-3 singles win over host Marquette and a 2-1 doubles win over Ball State.
The doubles team of Jose Carranza and John Zordani capped off a terrific weekend by taking home the MTC men's doubles championship. The duo defeated Ball State's Conner Andersen and Marko Guzina, 6-2, to register a perfect 3-0 weekend.
Darius Mackenzie also took home some hardware, earning men's singles runner-up honors. The sophomore from Woodland Hills, California wrapped up an undefeated weekend with a comeback win over Marquette's Nick Dykema, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 on Sunday.
"Today we took a few more losses than in the previous days, but a lot of that is due to Marquette playing some good tennis," head coach Danny Westerman said. "This was a very important tournament for us because we now have a very good idea where we need to get better."
In other singles matches, Zordani won his match against Krystiyan Trukov, 6-2, 6-2, while junior Elliott Sprecher won his match in three sets, defeating Scott Christian 6-7, 7-5, 10-6,
Sophomore Tomas Pitra claimed the fourth singles win for the Badgers, winning a three-set thriller over Mackenzie Stearns, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.
In doubles action, senior Alexander Kokorev and Mackenzie completed UW's other doubles win, defeating Collin Rigney and Matt Helm, 6-2.
The Badgers finished the weekend with a combined 15-5 singles record and a mark of 7-2 in doubles play.
"Our attitude was great and now we need to put in some solid hours on the practice court," Westerman added.
The Badgers continue their fall season on October 3rd as they head to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the ITA All-American Invite.

In Saturday's competition the Badgers continued their winning ways, collecting a 5-2 win over Ball State in singles and a 2-1 win over Valparaiso in doubles at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
"We had another pretty solid day today. We won all three of our three-set matches, which is great to see," UW head coach Danny Westerman said. "I know a few guys would have liked to have played better, but we will learn from those matches."
In singles, senior Alexander Kokorev defeated Lucas Andersen in three sets, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. After losing his first set 0-6, senior Jakhongir Jalolov came back to beat Andrew Stutz 6-4, 6-2.
Sophomore Darius Mackenzie defeated Marko Guzina, 6-3, 6-1 and junior John Zordani continued to add to the string of UW wins by defeating Connor Andersen in a three-set match, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Sophomore Tomas Pitra secured the fifth and final Wisconsin singles win of the day, defeating Nemanja Guzina 6-3, 3-6, 1-0.
In doubles action, sophomore Jose Carranza and Zordani paired up to take down Dave Bacalla and Daniel Oakes, 6-2, while Pitra and Jalalov defeated Chad Kissell and Kyle Dunn, 6-3.
"I hope we can close the tournament by taking another step forward with our tennis," Westerman said.
Wisconsin finishes tournament play on Sunday, taking the court at 9 a.m. (CT) for doubles matches against Ball State, followed by 1 p.m. singles matches against Marquette.

The Wisconsin men's tennis team opened its 2015-16 season this weekend at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, hosted by in-state rival Marquette.
On Friday, the Badgers dominated their competition, sweeping both Valparaiso 6-0 in singles and host team Marquette 3-0 in doubles.
"I was very pleased with our efforts today," UW head coach Danny Westerman said. "The first match of the season is never easy, but our guys did a great job of staying positive throughout the match and playing with a great deal of energy."
Junior Elliott Sprecher, who played his first match since 2014 after sitting out last season, was in full command in singles, defeating Daniel Oakes of Valparaiso, 6-1, 6-0. Senior Jakhongir Jalolov followed suit, picking up another singles victory by defeating Chad Kissell, 6-4, 6-4.
In other singles action, sophomore Darius Mackenzie and junior John Zordani each secured victories over Michael Savaglio and Kyle Dunn, 7-6, 6-4, and 6-2, 7-6, respectively. Sophomore Jose Carranza got the better of Lucas Waak in three sets, winning, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 and Alexander Kokorev defeated Dave Bacalla, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, Zordani and Carranza sealed the first UW victory over Nick Dykema and Daniel Fernandez of Marquette, winning, 6-3. Tomas Pitra and Jalalov also found a win, defeating Mackenzie Stearns and Alvaro Verdu, 6-1.
Kokorev and Sprecher completed the three-match sweep of Marquette by taking down Kristiyan Trukov and Andre Romanello, 6-2.
"I was extremely happy with our doubles as we played with a ton of enthusiasm and passion," Westerman said. "Hopefully we can carry this on to tomorrow's matches."
The Badgers continue their play Saturday, taking the court at 9 a.m. (CT) against Ball State in singles, followed by 11 a.m. matches against Valparaiso in doubles.
