Badgers Sweep SDSU

Wisconsin improves to 4-0 after doubleheader

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's tennis team completed their lone doubleheader of the season Saturday evening, following up a win over Valparaiso with a 7-0 sweep of South Dakota State. The Badgers won all 14 sets during the evening duel and are now a perfect 4-0 on the season under first-year head coach Danny Westerman.

"It was a really solid, clean win," said Westerman. "Mentally it's a long day, so I thought we challenged our guys in a very different way and they did very well."

Kicking off the second match of the day, senior Johnnie Jalalov and sophomore Chema Carranza continued their doubles success at the No. 2 spot, dominating Emerson Styles and Mateus Moreira of SDSU, 6-1. This marks Carranza and Jalalov's third consecutive win as doubles partners at the No. 2 position.

"Those guys are doing an unbelievable job," Westerman said of the Carranza and Jalalov duo. "They're giving us such a lift to not only get wins, but to get quick wins and put pressure on the other team. Those guys are really ready to go from the start."

Senior Alexander Kokorev and sophomore Darius Mackenzie secured the doubles point for UW, dispatching SDSU's Marco Paolo Castro and Chuck Tang, 6-3.

In singles play, junior John Zordani collected his first win of the season, blowing by Chuck Tang 6-1, 6-0  in the No. 6 spot to put UW up 2-0 in the match. Carranza kept the wins rolling, cruising by Lucas Pereira at the No. 5 position 6-0, 6-1.

After falling to Valparaiso earlier in the day at the No. 1 slot, sophomore Josef Dodridge found his groove against SDSU, clinching the victory for Wisconsin after taking down Henrique Pereira, 6-2, 6-1.

"We're constantly telling the guys to play aggressively," Westerman said. "Tonight Joe probably had a few more opportunities to do that and he took advantage of it."

The Badgers hit the road next weekend as they head to rival Minnesota to open up Big Ten play on February 7. Match time is set for Noon.
