Doubles duo falls in finals, Carranza reaches singles semifinals before exiting

MADISON, Wis. – Junior Chema Carranza opened the fall season for the Wisconsin men's tennis team with a doubles championship at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and came close to adding another title on Sunday at the Big Ten Individual Championships.

Playing on his home court at Nielsen Tennis Stadium, Carranza and fellow junior Josef Dodridge advanced to the doubles championship match against Ohio State's top-ranked duo of Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert. The Badgers duo got behind 3-0 and could never get out of the hole, eventually falling 6-3. Carranza and Dodridge finished the tournament with a record of 3-1.

Carranza's day was finished. Minutes after accepting his doubles runner-up trophy, Carranza was pitted against teammate Osgar O'Hoisin in the singles quarterfinals. O'Hoisin started hot, opening with a 6-1 victory in the second set, but Carranza wouldn't go quietly. Carranza would claim 6-3 victories in each of the next two sets to advance to the semifinals.

Things did not go as well against Northwestern's Dominik Stary in the semis. Carranza could never quite recover after getting down 3-0 and suffering a muscle strain in his back. He rallied within a game on a few occasions but ultimately exited with a 6-3, 6-4 decision.

Dodridge was the Badgers' third quarterfinals participant, but could not advance any further, dropping a 6-1, 6-2 match to Ohio State's Kyle Seelig.

"I was very pleased with the weekend," head coach Danny Westerman said. "All of our guys had some matches where they were playing great tennis. It was unfortunate that we had some head-to-head match-ups where teammates knocked each other out, but that also means that we had several guys advance pretty far in the draw. We had a very productive fall and we really enjoyed closing out tournament play with a great event at home."

Sunday's matches marked the conclusion of Wisconsin's fall schedule. The Badgers will next hit the courts on Jan. 14 for the FGCU Invitational in Fort Myers, Florida before opening dual play against Valparaiso on Jan. 28 at Nielsen.
