Badgers get back on track

UW knocks off in-state rival Marquette, 7-0

MADISON, Wis. – Just one day after suffering their first loss of the season to No. 8 TCU, the 36th-ranked Wisconsin men's tennis team returned to its winning ways. The Badgers (7-1) bounced back Saturday evening with an impressive 7-0 victory over in-state rival, Marquette, moving to 52-2-1 all-time against the Golden Eagles.

"I thought our guys were very professional from the moment we came back in the building today," said head coach Danny Westerman. "Our preparation, our warmup, everything was really on point, and then we carried that over onto the court. There was definitely no hangover from yesterday."

UW got off to a hot start, making quick work of the Golden Eagles on the doubles courts. Josef Dodridge and Lamar Remy paired up to take down Alvaro Verdu and Daniel Fernandez, 6-1. Meanwhile, the duo of Jose Carranza and Johnnie Jalalov knocked off Mackenzie Stearns and Nick Dykema, 6-1, earning the Badgers the doubles point heading into singles action.

It was a similar storyline on the singles courts for the Badgers. After winning all six of the first sets, it didn't take long for UW to close out Marquette. Dodridge led the way for the Badgers, picking up his sixth victory of spring by knocking off Verdu, 6-3, 6-0. Alongside Dodridge were Alexander Kokorev and Remy, who knocked off Fernandez and Dykema, 6-1, 4-6, 10-7, and 6-4, 6-0, respectively.

Also picking up victories for the Badgers were Osgar O'Hoisin, Carranza, and Darius Mackenzie. O'Hoisin picked up his sixth victory of the spring by knocking off Stearns, 6-3, 6-1. Carranza backed up his impressive victory on Friday with an equally impressive win on Saturday as he took down Kritiyan Trukov, 6-2, 6-2. Finally, with his whole team cheering him on, Mackenzie rounded out an impressive 7-0 victory for the Badgers with a thrilling win over Greg Anderson, 7-6, 7-6 (9-7).

"I think we saw some things we need to work on today," added Westerman. "But I saw some guys try to work on that stuff during the match and I'm excited to work on these things in practice."

The Badgers will be back in action on Thursday, March 3, as they host Illinois State. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. (CT).
