Wisconsin serves up 4-2 win over Brown

Badgers equal best start since 1977

DES MOINES, Iowa – The beat goes on for the Wisconsin men's tennis team.

With a 4-2 win over Brown in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, the No. 49 Badgers improved to 10-1 on the season, equaling the school's best start since 1977.

UW secured the doubles point in exciting fashion after splitting courts two and three, thanks to a 6-4 win from Chema Carranza and Jakhongir Jalolov at No. 2 doubles. With all eyes on court one, Lamar Remy and Josef Dodridge fought back to tie the match at 6-6 and force a tie-breaker. That's when the Badgers' top duo locked in and claimed all seven points of the extra frame for the 7-6 (7-0) win.

"No. 2 doubles has been solid all year for us and they got it done again today to start us off," head coach Danny Westerman explained. "Then on court one, we were down a break early, but the guys really fought back. In the tie-breaker they stepped up and took control. They played to win. The doubles point was huge as usual and I'm glad we came away with it."

Carranza carried the momentum over into singles action, making quick work of Jack Haworth at the No. 4 spot, 6-1, 6-0. The sophomore moved to 9-1 during the spring season. Then, senior Alexander Kokorev quickly followed suit, dispatching Mladen Mitak, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.

"Chema played lights out tennis," Westerman said. "He didn't give his opponent an inch. Same with Kokorev. To get straight-set victories on the board early really puts pressure on the opponent."

Wisconsin's fourth and decisive point came at the hands of freshman Osgar O'Hoisin, who out-lasted Charles Tan on court number four. O'Hoisin dropped the first set, 6-4, but recorded back-to-back 6-4, 6-4 frames to pull out the win and improve to 9-2 on the season.

"Osgar was down double-break in the third and went back to what he's good at," Westerman added. "He played big tennis and played to win. To battle back as a freshman and clinch the match in that fashion is a big deal."

The competition will step up for the Badgers on Sunday when they face host Drake at 11 a.m. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 36 in the latest ITA poll.

"Playing away from home pushes you in a different way and gets you out of your routine," Westerman said. "Tomorrow we'll be taking on a home team, which will be fun. I'm excited to see how we respond to having fans cheering against us."
