MADISON, Wis. – The No. 55 Wisconsin men's tennis team avenged last season's 4-1 loss to Green Bay with a 5-2 win against the in-state rival on Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Â
"Green Bay came out with great energy and intensity, and they played great doubles," said head coach
Danny Westerman. "I was happy with the way we took their best punch and really held on to our own and played our game. That first point was huge. The doubles point is always worth more than one, so that was big for us."
Â
The Badgers (9-1) have been finding ways to win in whatever fashion they can against tough opponents this year, and Saturday's match against the Phoenix was no different.
Â
In doubles action, sophomores
Josef Dodridge and
Lamar Remy led off the Badger lineup, collecting a 6-4 win over Green Bay's Leo Gomez-Islinger and Florian Kraenzler.
Â
Sophomore
Chema Carranza and senior
Jakhongir Jalalov stayed perfect, defeating Joey Leto and Howard Scott, 6-3, and improving their overall record as a pair to 9-0 at the No. 2 spot.
Â
In singles play,
Josef Dodridge battled back from a 4-2 deficit in his first set to take the match, 6-4, 6-0. The sophomore showed poise and resolve in his comeback and put the Badgers up 2-0 over the Phoenix.
Â
"He leads by example," Westerman said of Dodridge. "It's hard as a sophomore to be the most vocal leader in the locker room, but he's a leader by example and he works really hard every day. At the end of the day, he really loves to compete and that's all we ask for."
Â
Chema Carranza quickly dispatched Charlie Ridout at the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-0. Meanwhile,
Lamar Remy put the Badgers up 4-0 after a 6-2, 6-2 win over Joshua Schramm at No. 3.
Â
Freshman
Osgar O'Hoisin picked up the final win for UW, gritting out a three-set victory over Florian Kraenzler, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
Â
The Badgers prepare to hit the road next weekend, traveling to Des Moines, Iowa, to face Brown and No. 36 Drake. Wisconsin is 1-0 on the road this season, their lone win coming from a 4-3 upset over border rival, No. 36 Minnesota.
Â
"I think it's going to really prepare us for the rest of the season and Big Ten play when we're going home and away every other weekend," Westerman said of the upcoming away matches. "Drake is very good and Brown plays a great Ivy League schedule where they're in one of the better conferences tennis-wise, so we're going to see another opportunity to find out what we're made of."
