REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – After close loss to No 4 California and a sweep of No. 19 Oregon State on day one, the Wisconsin men's rowing team returned for day two of the Stanford Invite and they certainly didn't disappoint as they took two out of three races over No. 16 Stanford.
"The race plan for Stanford is absolutely no secret since I've known the coach for 35 years and we speak probably once a week," said head coach
Chris Clark.
Wisconsin's second varsity eight crew was the first to hit the water as they cruised past Stanford's second varsity eight with a time of 5 minutes and 50.9 seconds while Stanford finished with a time of 6:03.0.
However, the Cardinal rebounded as their varsity eight finished with an impressive time of 5:41.3 to beat Wisconsin, who posted a respectable time of their own of 5:46.2.
"We're just not quite ready at the top end of speed," added Clark. "They got out, took the lead and we never made a serious enough bid to take the lead from them. They finished 5:41 which on the second day of racing is real quick for them."
The final race was Wisconsin all the way as the third varsity eight boat (5:50.4) cruised to a nearly 30 second victory over Stanford's third varsity eight boat (6:17.3).
"The second boat won easily and the third boat had our biggest win here in a number of years," added Clark. "It wasn't even close which was good to see because we haven't seen any kind of speed at that level for a long time.
"It's been a good trip though. We won three in a row which we've only done a few times. To win even two of three is tough. But we raced Cal hard and we raced well against Oregon State and Stanford but we're still not quite ready for prime time. Not yet.
"We've got a tremendous amount of depth this year which is significantly better than last year. We're right on track. We just have to keep moving forward and continue to improve week in and week out and we'll be ready for Eastern Sprints, which is a month and the national championships, which are about six weeks out."
The Badgers will be back in action on Saturday, April 23, as they host the Devil's Lake Dual and take on Marietta on Devil's Lake in Baraboo, Wisconsin.
