UW bounces back from last weekend’s setbacks with 7-0 shutout of Michigan State

MADISON, Wis. – After watching a seven-match win streak end last weekend, head coach Danny Westerman was eager to see how his Wisconsin men's tennis team would respond. He got the answer he was looking for in resounding fashion Friday night as the 44th-ranked Badgers dominated Michigan State, 7-0, at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

"I thought we played better," Westerman explained. "We missed some opportunities last weekend and we need to control these little moments when you can take advantage of situations. We have a really competitive group and our guys fight. The Big Ten is really tough and you have to play well to get victories."

The Badgers (14-3, 4-2) moved to 10-1 at home on the season and have now posted their highest win total since 2010.

"This was really important for us to bounce back, because the Big Ten is a tough conference and every team is going to challenge you," sophomore Lamar Remy explained. "You can't take any team for granted, so you have to keep your foot on the pedal and we did that tonight."

UW's number one doubles duo of Lamar Remy and Josef Dodridge set the tempo early, blitzing MSU's top tandem, Mac Roy and Michael Dube, 6-1. Moments later Chema Carranza and Johnnie Jalalov joined them in the winner's circle with a 6-3 win over the Spartans' Jasper Koenen and Billy Shisler on court two.

UW's doubles domination was only the beginning.

The Badgers would drop just two sets during the six singles matches in knocking off Michigan State for the second straight season.

Carranza was simply too much for Shisler on court 5, posting a tidy 6-3, 6-2 in under an hour. The sophomore has won nine of his last 10 matches and moved to a team-best 13-2 this spring. Remy, who moved into the No. 2 singles position for the first time season, would also cruise at a 6-3, 6-2 win over Dube, remaining undefeated in conference play (3-0).

"Lamar did a nice job and he's getting better every week," Westerman said. "I though he earned an opportunity to play No. 2, but all of our guys are so even. So on any given day we have a lot of guys that are interchangeable."

O'Hoisin clinched the match for Wisconsin with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alexander Kim on court four. The Badgers freshman improves to 13-3 in his UW career, including a mark of 4-1 in Big Ten action.

Senior Alexander Kokorev came storming back at No. 3 singles to pick up his first Big Ten win over the season. After sailing through the first set 6-1, Kokorev trailed 5-1 in the second frame before winning the final six games to post a 6-1, 7-5 win.

At No. 1 singles, Dodridge out-lasted Roy, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, moving to 10-5 on the spring season. Junior John Zordani rounded out the clean sleep for Wisconsin with a 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 10-4 win over Ivan Rakic on court six.

The Badgers will play host to No. 21 Michigan (16-4, 5-1) on Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. First serve is set for Noon (CT).

"Sunday is a great opportunity to have Michigan at home," Westerman said. "They're one of the all-time Big Ten greats and they're a top-25 team. Our guys are going to be really excited and fired up for this chance at home. We can't wait."
