ITHACA, N.Y. – Playing two top-50 schools this weekend apparently didn't phase Wisconsin. The No. 31 Badgers (5-1) clawed their way to a 4-1 victory over No. 43 ranked Clemson (8-3) on Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y.
"The guys did a fantastic job today," head coach
Danny Westerman said. "We have been playing great doubles and it gave us a boost in the singles. After winning four first sets Clemson did a great job competing and fighting back to make this a very close match. But, our guys dug in and found a way to close."
The Badgers did what they do best in the doubles category: win.
Yet to drop a doubles point this season, the Badgers continued their trend with two wins at the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions.
After junior
Lamar Remy and freshman
Chase Colton lost their first doubles match of the season, 6-2, juniors
Josef Dodridge and
Chema Carranza picked their teammates up with a 6-1 win over Clemson's Airturo Pinazo and Robert Dudley on court one. The duo moves to 3-2 on the season.
In a fantastic match at the No. 3 spot, senior
John Zordani and sophomore
Osgar O'Hoisin clinched the doubles point for Wisconsin with a win over Alex Favrot and Carlos Kelaidis, 6-3.
But O'Hoisin wasn't content.
The Dublin, Ireland native, recorded the first singles win of the day in impressive fashion, retiring Sam Edwards, 6-2, 6-2.
The trend was contagious for Dodridge.
After dropping a deflating two-set match last week against Drake, Dodridge had a short memory and blazed to a two-set win over Daffra Sanon, 6-3, 7-5.
The Badgers advanced to a 3-1 lead, but the two schools were deadlocked in the remaining three sets of the dual and the match was still up in the air.
It was freshman
Daniel Soyfer who came up clutch – a popular trend for the young Badger.
Coming from behind yet again, Soyfer outlasted Carlos Kelaidis in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6) to seal the Wisconsin team win, 4-1.
"Soyfer hung in and did a great job stepping up in the biggest moments and played to win in the critical points," Westerman emphasized. "That was key in his match and what we tell all the guys in the big moments."
Soyfer now moves to a remarkable 6-1 record in his debut dual season.
By no means in the clear, the Badgers have their hands full tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. when they take on powerhouse and 24th-ranked Cornell. Westerman and the Badgers appear ready.
"We are excited for a quick turnaround against a very good Cornell team."
