UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Head coach
Danny Westerman spoke on behalf of the loss to No. 15 Michigan last week and said, "Now we have been in these situations against top teams in recent matches and have to make the necessary adjustments in practice both mentally and physically. I know our guys are up for it." And boy was the Badger squad ready for the Big Ten battle in University Park, Pa. Friday against the Nittany Lions. The Badgers shellacked PSU, 7-0, marking their first win over the Nittany Lions since 2012.
With the win, Wisconsin moves to 15-4 on the season and keeps pace in the Big Ten race at 6-2. The Badgers have won 15 matches for the first time since 2010.
"A Big Ten win on the road is never easy," said Westerman after the match. "The match was closer than the score shows and our guys were very tough at the end of sets today. That was the difference. We have a very close group of guys and you can see how much they love to compete."
Wisconsin made a statement in doubles despite Penn State's strong case in the doubles category this year.
Juniors
Chema Carranza and
Josef Dodridge won first in doubles, dominating PSU's No. 1 double's duo of C. De La Bassetiere and Christian Lakoseljac, 6-0. Both juniors have found success this year in doubles and also in singles. Together though, the two have racked up a 10-5 record in the dual season.
Speaking of stellar records, junior
Lamar Remy and freshman
Chase Colton claimed their 15th win of the spring season, moving to a 15-3 record on the year. The tandem downed C. Antonopoulos and David Kohan, 6-3, to claim the team doubles point and lead the Nittany Lions 1-0.
Sophomore
Osgar O'Hoisin, who wasn't able to finish his doubles game at the No. 3 spot, was sure to make and impact in the singles bracket. O'Hoisin was the first Badger done, winning impressively in straight sets over Antonopoulos, 6-4, 6-2.
Doubles partners Remy and Colton won in succession in the singles category. The older Badger, Remy, led the way for the younger Colton, beating De La Bassetiere at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 7-5. The junior continues to 11-6 on the year. Colton finished on Remy's heels, winning at the No. 5 spot over Penn State's Ben Lieb, 6-4, 6-4.
Coincidentally, No. 1 doubles pair Dodridge and Carranza, finished consecutively as well. Dodridge won in straight sets over Lakoseljac 7-6, 6-2. Carranza claimed a win at the No. 3 spot over Aws Laaribi, 6-3, 7-6. Carranza is now on a six-game win streak and holds the squad's top overall record on the year at 25-6.
Freshman
Daniel Soyfer, the runner up to Carranza's overall win record at 23-8, kept doing what he's done all year: win. Soyfer won in straight sets over Marc Collado, 6-2, 7-6, moving the young Badger to 14-3 in the dual season.
Wisconsin has a day away from competition before taking on perennial powerhouse and second-ranked Ohio State on Sunday at 11 a.m. in Columbus, Ohio.
