WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Badgers had their hands full on Saturday morning with Ohio State, a team that has earned the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament for the past 12 seasons. No. 31 Wisconsin fell to 2nd-ranked Ohio State, 4-0, in the semifinals.
"Our guys fought hard against today but Ohio State just played better than us," head coach
Danny Westerman said. "I thought we played a much better doubles point this time around. However, Ohio State was too good in singles. We have bounced back all year after losses and learned from them."
The Badgers and the Buckeyes squared off late in the regular season, a match Ohio State took 4-0 as well.
The Badgers battles closely on all three doubles courts, but dropped the match's first point for only the fourth time all season this afternoon.
Juniors
Chema Carranza and
Josef Dodridge played Ohio State's 14th-ranked doubles duo, Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen, at the No. 1 doubles spot. The Wisconsin pair dropped the match, 6-4, which puts them at 13-6 in the spring.
At the No. 3 spot, senior
John Zordani and sophomore
Osgar O'Hoisin lost by the same score differential to OSU's doubles pair Hunter Tubert and JJ Wolf, 6-4.
After the conclusion of the doubles point, it was all OSU in the first set. O'Hoisin was the lone Badger to score a first set win and did so in a 6-4 fashion.
The overwhelming depth at Ohio States five and six spots swarmed young Badgers
Chase Colton and
Daniel Soyfer. Colton lost his match with a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Pollanen. Soyfer, after losing 6-0 in the first, bounced back in the second but got broken late by Kyle Seelig for a 6-4 second set and straight-set loss.
Carranza fell at the No. 3 spot to powerhouse and No. 9-ranked Hugo Di Feo, 6-2, 6-1. The loss today doesn't change the incredible resolve the junior has shown all season long. Including his clutch win Saturday over Northwestern's Sam Shropshire, Carranza owns an impressive 27-9 overall record on the year.
The Badgers now head home to prep for the NCAA tournament which starts on May 12. The NCAA tournament Selection Show takes place on May 2 at 4 p.m.
"We are excited to put in a great 10 days of practice before the NCAA tournament. We will be ready and fired up to keep playing."
